Frederic J. Ellyson Jr.

Frederic Julian Ellyson Jr. was born in Dallas, to Vivien Hudson Ellyson and Frederic Julian Ellyson Sr. He was reared in Fort Stockton, and was a 1945 graduate of Fort Stockton High School.

He attended Schreiner Military Institute in Kerrville, finishing with a business degree. He attended Texas Tech in Lubbock, then transferred to Sul Ross State Teacher's College in Alpine, in order to study piano with George Kelver from Eastman School of Music in New York. Professor Kelver refined Fred's God-given talent to the piano perfectionist he became.

Fred was graduated from Sul Ross in 1950 with bachelor of music and bachelor of science degrees. That fall he began teaching in a small studio in Odessa. On December 21 of that year, he married Nancy Marian Kuykendall, an English teacher in the Odessa Public Schools, at the First Presbyterian Church in Odessa. In 1957, their son, John Frederic, was born in Fort Stockton.

While attending Texas Tech, he had enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve; he was called to active duty in the summer of 1951. He had studied aviation and aeronautics while attending Schreiner and had hoped to go into the Navy Air Corps, but a vision problem prevented that. Instead he was assigned to Little Creek Naval Base in Norfolk, Virginia, where he was appointed to Special Services as Chaplain's Aide and organist for all the Protestant Church services at Little Creek Base. He was ship's organist for all sea duty/wartime exercises.

During his Navy term, he was asked to participate in an organist-for-a-Sunday program, and played at several large churches in that area of the East Coast.

At the conclusion of his Navy obligations, and at the request of his parents, he and Nancy returned to Fort Stockton to assist with the family Abstract business. Eventually he returned to teaching and built and managed the Fine Arts Studios. He retired from teaching some time after his father's death and shortly thereafter assumed management of Ellyson real estate interests. He was knowledgeable in the mechanics of piano construction and became adept as a piano technician.

Fred died May 4, 2007, in his home. Survivors are wife Nancy, son John Frederic and his wife Sondra, Carlsbad, New Mexico; grandsons Nathan, Cody and Steven, all of New Mexico and a sister, Joan Ellyson Neely, Houston.
