Nellie Borron McDurmon Newcomb was born in 1909 in Butler, Mo., to Marie Elizabeth and Edward Barron Borron. They moved their family to Imperial in 1915 to become farmers when Nellie was six years old, where she resided most of her life. She earned her bachelor's degree from Sul Ross State University and taught school in excess of 39 years, including a year in Fort Stockton, 33 years in Buena Vista/Imperial and five years in the Midland school districts, plus relieving in various vacancies in the Grandfalls school system. She truly loved every student she ever had and always saw their potential. Her students endearingly referred to her as "Miss Nellie." She was not prejudiced; she believed Acts 17:26, that God made the whole human race from one blood and each person was special to the Creator.

After retirement, she continued use of her teaching skills as adult education teacher in Imperial preparing adults for their GEDs. As a young girl, she committed her life to Jesus Christ. For years, she has been a charter member of the First Baptist Church of Imperial. In 1929, she was married to "China" McDurmon, who preceded her in death in 1964.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Merle Borron and Arthur Borron, both of Imperial, and Don Borron of Kingsland. In 1967, she married Robert Houston Newcomb, who also preceded her in death.

She is survived by five children, and five stepchildren, Patsy Six of Plains, Gerry King of Odessa, Glenda Akins of Stanton, Ronnie McDurmon of Sherman, Marsha McDurmon of Odessa, Jim Newcomb of Oklahoma City, Robert Newcomb of Guthrie, Okla., Charlie Newcomb of Skiatook, Okla., Donny Newcomb of Yukon, Okla., and Anita Myers of Bethany, Okla. She has 27 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

She was a very resourceful woman. She believed that work was honorable and gave a full day's work for a day's pay. She was very artistic; her left-handed penmanship was like a beautiful work of art. She took art lessons when she was 50 years old, leaving her family with some treasured oil paintings. Her knuckles were gnarled from arthritis, yet the touch or pat of her hand was gentle and loving and reassuring. The sweet, smiling blink of her eyes, along with the slight nod of her head at the same time was her way of giving a loving hug without invading your space. She was always kind and gracious and fair. She never tried to get something for nothing, knowing that for everything someone had to pay the price. She always focused on the good in people and the beauty in things rather than the bad and the ugly. She was humbled by an awareness that any strength she had, as well as any potential she possessed, was only a loan from God to whom she would one day give an account. When the going got tough, she got tougher. No … she wasn't perfect, but she strove to follow God's leading not to conform to this world but to be transformed into the likeness of His dear Son, Jesus Christ. She steered her life in that direction and never changed her course. She knew how to forgive because she had experienced God's forgiveness. She began her talks with God as "Our gracious Heavenly Father, we come to you as humbly as we know how." She once told her daughter when she had a hard time going to sleep she would picture in her mind the first street in town and begin to pray for each family, then move on to the next street and do the same. She trusted God in circumstances over which she had no control and in situations that she did not understand because she knew He was faithful! Thank you, Lord Jesus, for giving us such a mother! Nellie departed from this earth and went to spend eternity with her Creator Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Oct. 6, 2001, at 3:30 p.m. from the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Bill and Glenda Akins in Stanton.

Funeral services are to be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at the "Old" Community House in Imperial followed by burial at the Imperial Cemetery . Family members request that memorials in her memory be given to any of the following: First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 100, Imperial Texas, 79743, Sherwood Christian Academy, P.O. Box 13448, Odessa, Texas, 79768-3448; or Hospice of Midland Inc., P.O. Box 2621, Midland, Texas, 79702. Arrangements are with Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home of Crane.

Dixie L. Nance, Fort Stockton died Friday, April 14, 2006. She was 98 years old. Born October 1, 1907, in Scallorn, Dixie was of the Baptist faith. She was united in marriage to Leslie Nance December 13, 1924 in Lometa. She had lived in Ozona before coming to Fort Stockton in 1941.

Secretary for the Texas Department of Transportation in Fort Stockton, before her retirement, Dixie was a member of the Senior Citizens.

Preceding Dixie in death was: her husband, Leslie; her son, Leslie Nance, Jr.; and grandchild, Terry Colleen Scudday.

She is survived by: her daughter, LA Ferne Scudday, Alpine; nine grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great- grandchild.

Graveside services were held Saturday, April 15 in East Hill Cemetery . Reverend Bob Cheek officiated.
Arrangements were under the direction of Fort Stockton Funeral Home.

Carolina M. Nunez, 70, died Saturday, April 8, 2006 in Odessa. Born December 13, 1935, in Midland, she was the daughter of Y. E. and Esperanza Quintela Morales. Carolina and Frank Nunez were united in marriage January 24, 1952. She was a member of the Lady's Golf Association.

Surviving is: her husband Frank Nunez, Fort Stockton; her son, Rudy Nunez, Fort Stockton; her daughter, Brenda Nunez, Odessa; her mother, Esperanza Morales, Odessa; and her sister, Aurora Booth, Odessa. Sever grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren also survive.

Carolina's father, Y. E. Morales, preceded her in death.

A rosary was held Monday April 10 in St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 11. in St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Father Floro Hinacay officiated. Interment will be in Fort Stockton Catholic Cemetery . Arrangements were under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home Fort Stockton.

Maggie J. Nelson, 90, Fort Stockton, died March 29, 2006 in her home. She was a Jehovah Witness. Born July 4, 1915 in Camp Wood, she was the daughter of John and Lena Shipman. Maggie J. or Mama J., as most people knew her had lived in the Fort Stockton area 1996. Maggie and Marvin Nelson were united in marriage November 12, 1933 at Barksdale Ranch. Some of her happiest times were spent with her family on her ranch just outside Barksdale. She loved the outdoors and taking care of her pets. She worked with the Nueces County School District in the school cafeteria for 25 years, retiring in 1985. She will be remembered for her wonderful meals, which would always include your favorite food if she knew you were going to be there. He face would light up when she was talking about her children, she was so proud of them. A faithful follower of the Jehovah Witness, Maggie was recognized for her punctually, dedication to her studies and witness to others.

She was preceded in death by: her husband, Marvin Nelson; her parents; her sisters, Dorothy Pennington and Isophene Farris; and her brother Sydney Shipman.

Her sons, John A. Nelson and wife, Jean, Joe T. Nelson and wife Algiarite, all of Fort Stockton and her daughter, Geneva McMains, Port Arthur, survive her. Thirteen grandchildren 27 great-grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren also survive her.

Graveside services were held April 1 at Barksdale Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Nelson Funeral Home, Camp Wood.

Patty Esparza Nanez, 45, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, in an Odessa hospital. Service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Church of Christ with burial in East Hill Cemetery . Arrangements are by Memorial Funeral Home.

Survivors include her husband, Adan Nanez Sr.; father, Frank Esparza; mother, Hortencia Cantu; sons, Adan Nanez Jr. of Midland, Alex Nanez of Fort Stockton and David Nanez of Oceanside, Calif.; daughters, Evelyn Nanez of Fort Stockton and Desiree Nanez of Granbury; brothers, Frank Esparza Jr. of Norman, Okla., Abel Esparza and Greg Esparza, both of Shawnee, Okla., Paul Esparza of Oklahoma City and Willie Esparza of Plainview; and sisters, Beatrice Morgan of Lawton, Okla., Diana Casey of Chickasha, Okla., Hortencia Contreras of Carter, Okla., Connie Guzman of Sentinel, Okla., Mary Jane Oliver of Oklahoma City and Simona Johnson of Elk City, Okla.

Nancy Moore Noelke, 84, a retired business owner, died Friday, April 25, 1997, at Pecos County Memorial Hospital. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Sunday at Fort Stockton Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Ed Kelly officiating. Burial will be at East Hill Cemetery . Arrangements by Fort Stockton Funeral Home.

She was born in Pecos and was a resident of Fort Stockton.

SURVIVORS: Daughters, Sally Jones Andrade of El Paso and Amanda Moore Krejei of Sterling City; brother, Joe E. Moore of Fort Stockton; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild

Lorenzo ``Lencho'' Nieves, 89, of Fort Stockton, a contract cemetery worker, died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at Pecos County Memorial Hospital. Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Jim Chaumont officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery . Arrangements by Fort Stockton Funeral Home.

He had lived in Fort Stockton since 1910. He was an Army veteran. He was Catholic.

SURVIVORS: Wife, Ines Martinez Nieves of Fort Stockton; daughter, Lorenza Ramirez of McCamey; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Glenn J. Newton, 78, died Friday, May 8, 1998, at the Fort Stockton Nursing Center. Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Immanuel Baptist Church with the Rev. Skip Hill officiating. Burial will be at the East Hill Cemetery . Arrangements by Fort Stockton Funeral Home.

He was born Oct. 9, 1919, in Portland, Ore., and had been a Fort Stockton resident 20 years. He served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II. He was Baptist.

Sherry Nall, Fort Stockton, died at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, July 5, 2007 in Junction. He was 79 years old.

Born November 29, 1928, in Young County, Tex., he was the son of Edith and Marvin Nall. He was a very prominent coach in Fort Stockton for many years. He touched many lives during his teaching and coaching. After his coaching career, he became an officer for First National Bank in Fort Stockton. All who knew him will miss him
Sherry was preceded in death by two brothers, Ross Nall and Wayne Nall, and by his daughter, Susan.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Betty Nall, of the family ranch in Junction; his son, Mark Nall, Dilley; and his sister, Donna Gilbert, Bowie.

Funeral services were held at the First United Methodist Church in Junction Saturday, July 7. A memorial service was held in Fort Stockton, Monday, July 9, at the First United Methodist Church. A private burial was in Fort Stockton. Arrangements were directed by Gentry-Fife Funeral Home in Junction
