Benningfield Cemetery, 16 Jun 1885,"This
cemetery is located in the southeast quadrant of Red River County,
Texas. GPS COORDINATES: Datum WGS84: 33 Deg 33.144N, 94 Deg 59.300W.
From Hwy 82 East and FM 412, take FM 412 south for 3.6 miles
to the intersection with CR 4116. Take CR 4116 east for 6/10
mile to CR 4135, Take CR 4135 right or south for 8/10 mile. Stop!
You should be at the ruins of an old cattle corral on the left.
Park your vehicle and proceed east for 250 yards heading for
a large stand of trees. In the trees you will find the cemetery.
Please attempt this in a high clearance vehicle only and be prepared
to back out for the last 6/10 miles as there is no place to turn
around. The oldest marked burial is that of S. E. Fowler who
died on 16 Jun 1885. This cemetery was surveyed by Lawrence and
Sue Dale on 26 Feb 1999. We visited the site again on 11 Dec
2003 and took the GPS readings. We also did a re-walk of the
cemetery noting marker changes. While there we met the current
landholder Mike Wise and had a nice conversation about the cemetery
and the possibility of a thorough cleanup."
