Fobbs - Red River County

Fobbs Cemetery

"I don't know if this is something you can use but I know of an abandoned
and unpublished cemetery that you might like to do something with.
In March of 1997, I located an abandoned cemetery. It is located on the southern
outskirts of Bagwell, and lies east of F.M. Road 2573, between F.M. 2573 and Brook's
Lake. There is no road leading to it and it is surrounded by private property. The
only way to reach it is on foot, therefore accurate directions to it are impossible.
Only a few tombstones are present and all of them have been knocked down and are lying
about among brush and beneath large trees along the north bank of a small creek.
Cattle were being pastured on the land the day I found the cemetery.
Book 20, page 611, in Red River Co. Records: Malcomb Fobbs (Forbes) was paid $5 for
one quarter acre to be set aside as a burying ground. The $5 was paid by trustees
Milas Bagwell, Hardy James, and W.A. Baker or Barker. An undated paper left in the
Clarksville library by Grady Moore says that a Baptist Church once stood near Fobbs
cemetery back before the railroad came.
He had listed several graves which coincided with the ones I found in the cemetery.
His list contained only one grave which I found no trace of during my visit. This
cemetery has sometimes been referred to as the Brooks Cemetery in later years because
that family owned the surrounding land."

NOTES Miles Bagwell is the man from whom the town of Bagwell got its name.
Jacob Blanton was a first settler of Red River Co.arriving there Sept 28,
1837. He served in the Republic of Texas Army in Capt William Becknell's
Minute Men in 1841 & 1842 per Muster Roll, Pension Application, and Land Grant data.
