Lucinda Register was born 10 Sep 1815 in TN, daughter of Francis Register and Jemima Glasscock. She was raised in eastern Tennessee and married in Washington County TN on 23 Aug 1838 to William Henley Hartman, also of Washington County. He was born 20 Sep 1808 in Washington Co TN.

The first child of Lucinda was born 8 May 1839 - Archibald Register Hartman. On the 1840 Washington Co TN Census, William Hartman is listed with one son under age 5, himself and Lucinda in their household.

By the time the 1850 Census for Washington Co TN was enumerated on July 20th, four more children had been born to Lucinda:
James Anderson Hartman - 1 Oct 1842
Mary Ann Hartman - 9 Aug 1844
Jemima Jane Hartman - 2 Sep 1846
John Wesley Hartman - 22 May 1850

In the year 1852, two major incidents affected Lucinda's life. The first was the birth of her last child, Caroline Washington Hartman on March 23rd, and the second was her husband leaving their home for California just a couple of months later, hastening towards all the glorious stories of instant wealth and good fortune he was seeking there for his family. However, California did not prove to be prosperous for Hartman, and Lucinda would never see her husband again. He died 12 Mar 1854 at Georgetown, Placer Co CA. Lucinda was a Widow at the age of 39.

On the 1860 Washington Co TN Census Lucinda is listed as "Lucinda Hortman", living in Jonesboro, next door to her brother, A G Register. Listed as age 44 and a Farmer, her assets were worth $1,125.00 and her real property worth $489.00. Living in her household were her children James, Jemima, Mary, John and Caroline. Archibald is not in the household with her and had left her home to be a school teacher.

The year 1861 changed the Hartman household again. Jemima married 22 Aug 1861 to neighbor, Jacob Hays. Archibald was a School Teacher in Roane Co TN and married there on 27 Nov 1861 to Margaret Ava Fender (26 Mar 1839 - 2 Sep 1930). In December James joined the Confederacy, enlisting in Co F 43rd TN Infantry, to fight in the war between the states.

The war impacted Archibald's life, also. He became a spy for the Confederacy. Under the guise of his teaching profession, he was able to move around the region and report what the Union Army was doing in the area around the Mason-Dixon line. However, to keep from being found out, he was forced to take Oath to the Union and was drafted into the Union Army - Co D 143rd IL Infantry - a stigma that would haunt him the rest of his life.

A R Hartman was a teacher in the school held in the Masonic Lodge in Rockwall for five years. He also worked as a Lawyer, was the Rockwall School Superintendant for many years and a County Judge in Rockwall County from 1886 - 1892. He died 19 Mar 1917 in the flu epidemic and is buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery next to his wife and some of his children.

James also survived the war and in 1867, Lucinda and all her children except Jemima. Jemima remained in Greene Co TN with her husband and lived there the remainder of her life.

The trip from the eastern-most part of Tennessee to Texas took Lucinda and family five months. Late in her life Lucinda told her grandchildren stories about the journey and how they arrived at their new home in the dead of winter, forced to live in a barn until a house could be built.

Lucinda and her unmarried children were enumerated on the 1870 Kaufman Co TX Census as:
James A Hartman 27 Farmer TN $1250. / $500.
John W Hartman 20 TN
Mary Ann Hartman 24 TN
Caroline Hartman 17 TN
Lucinda Hartman 56 TN

1872 was a happy time for Lucinda. Three of her children married in Kaufman County.
James married Mary T Forrester on 11 Apr 1872,
Caroline married Samuel J West on 20 Oct 1872, and
Mary Ann married Robert Gray Hays on 28 Nov 1872.

However, the joyous times did not last.
James wife, Mary, died 27 Apr 1873 in childbirth with their first child and was buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery. By 1874 Caroline had also died, but it is not known where she is buried. Her husband remarried in 1875.

In 1875 John Wesley Hartman married Mary Gardenhire, daughter of neighbors George W. Gardenhire and Mary Ann Webb. And on 9 Apr 1876, James Hartman remarried in Rockwall County to Mary E Joyce. And on 29 Jan 1879, Lucinda's daughter Mary Hays, died and was buried at Mt. Zion. Her husband, Robert, never remarried and is buried beside her at Mt. Zion (17 Jun 1837 - 6 Mar 1914).

By 1880, when the first Rockwall County Census was enumerated, Lucinda was living with her son, John, his wife Mary, and three children: William, Charlie and Cora.

Lucinda died 7 May 1882 and was buried at Mt. Zion.

Lucinda Register Hartman exemplifies what it meant to live the arduous life of a pioneer woman. She deserves to be honored here.
