From "A History of Greater Dallas and Vicinity", Vol. II, pg 418, edited by Mr. L. B. Hill, 1909:
John Lovett moved his family from Virginia to Gibson Co, TN in 1830's. Samuel & Catherine moved to Texas in 1854 and set up house in what was then Kaufman County (but in the area that became Rockwall County). Samuel served as a Texas Home Guard during the War and died in 1875. Samuell and Elizabeth Lovett were Charter Members of the Methodist Church in Rockwall.

Samuel Lovett's Confederate Service

Enlisted 2 Sept 1863 in Co G 2nd TX Cavalry & was discharged from that unit in Dec 1863. However, he re-enlisted & is on the roll of A.J. Hardin's Co H, 1st Regt, 2nd Brig, Texas State Troops, dated 15 Mar 1864. Enlistment document reads:
Sam'l Lovett, 1st Sgt; age 49; enrolled 15 Mar 1864, Kaufman Co by A.J. Hardin for indefinite period; travelled 20 miles to rendezvous; Horse $350; horse equipment $50; arms $50; 2nd class; served since Sept 2nd 1863.


Samuel's oldest children, Jane and Frank, married a brother and sister, Susan and John Smith. His daughters, Miranda and Bettie, married brothers, Robert and Edward Davis.

OBIT: The Lancaster Herald - 18 Mar 1908
Robert M. DAVIS, who settled in Rockwall county, Texas, in 1856, died near Rockwall.
He died Tuesday, and a brother suddenly expired at Ringgold, four days before.

The Ferris Missionary Baptist Church was organized March 27, 1875 with 32 charter members. In 1879, together with the Campbellite Church and the Masons, they built at 5th and Baker Streets, the Masons using the upstairs. In 1881 Brother N. V. Lovett organized the first Sunday School in the church.
