Brief Overview

Stephenville, Texas is located almost in the middle of Erath County.  Founded
in the 1860s by John M. Stephen, the area was named by its owner since
he owned all of Erath County at the time and had donated the land for the
first courthouse.

There are over 15,000 residents in Stephenville.  The economy is largely
centered around agriculture as it was in the days of its early settlers.
Many families are engaged in dairy farming, the chief industry of Erath
County.  Other industries ranging from textiles to meat packing
flourish here as well.

Stephenville is the home of Tarleton State University, a well-known
liberal arts institution of higher education.  The University is said
to be the largest employer in Stephenville.

Stephenville's celebrities are:  bandleader Milton Brown;  heart
surgeon Dr. Bud Fraiser;  and seven-time world all-around
Rodeo champion Ty Murray.  Although he was born
in Arizona, he now makes his home in Stephenville.
