Joseph Berry Wade Born: 17 JUL 1815 Pendleton District, South Carolina, died: 17 JUL 1877 Rosewood, Upshur, Texas, and buried in Grice Cemetery. He was the son of Telitha Wade (1790-1845) who moved from SC to Auraria, Lumpkin Co., Ga. about 1834 when they show up in the state census. They soon took part in the first gold rush in the nation as gold was discovered in Lumpkin County and Joseph was a gold miner until the Civil War. A 31 Mar 1846 deed mentions Joseph Berry Wade and brothers John L. M. Wade, David A. Wade and mother Telitha Wade in Lumpkin County. Also in 1846 he is shown in a deed as a trustee for the Auraria Episcopal Methodist Church. During the Civil War Joseph served in the 1st Georgia Volunteer Infantry (Ramsey) 821 Georgia Militia & Confederate Army "Home Guard" for Lumpkin Co., Ga. along with his 15-year old son, Whitfield Anthony Wade. His son William Asbery Wade died in Atlanta, Georgia in it's defense during Sherman's March. In 1869 he moved his family by ox-drawn wagon train from Auraria to Upshur County, Texas. They traveled down through Alabama to Mobile where they boarded a flat-bottomed boat and across the gulf, up the Mississippi River and connecting to the Caddo Lake and finally landing at Jefferson, Texas. The family built their first home directly across from the current Little Mound Baptist Church, moved for a short time in Kaufman County, Texas and most of the family moved back to Upshur County where they settled in Rosewood. Joseph died in the home of his son, Whitfield A. Wade in Rosewood, Upshur County. Whitfield's home, orchards, and blacksmith shop was located just northeast of Rosewood and the old homeplace was razed to build the current home of Dr. R. A. Hinson. After Joseph's death his wife Sarah moved in with daughter Ann Wade Gray until Sarah's death 18 MAY 1908 in Edgewood, Van Zandt Co., Tx.. She is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Edgewood.
