J

Johnson, Emma Sansom - Emma was born in Social Circle, Walton Co., Ga. Her parents were Micajah Sansom (Jr.) and Permelia (Lemila) Vann Sansom who were married 6 Nov 1818 in Jasper Co., Ga. Emma's family moved to Murray Co., Ga. in 1848 and in 1850 lived in Murray Co., Ga. with her parents, siblings and brothers who were by then married. A brother, John Leonard Sansom, lived in Murray/Whitfield Co. all his life and is the one son of his parents who did not go to either Alabama or to Texas.

The family moved to Gadsden, Etowah Co., Alabama area by 1852 and Emma's father died on Christmas Eve, 1859.

Emma also has a monument (Children of the Confederacy) on the site of her birth which is right on the Walton-Newton Co., Georgia line. Her grandfather, Micajah Sansom, Sr. died in 1830 in Newton Co., Ga. and the family appears to have once attended the Harris Springs Baptist Church in Walton (now Newton Co.) Georgia. Emma's sister married in Walton Co., Ga., and lived in Gadsden, Alabama and later in Upshur Co., Tx. (Martha Sansom McKinney) and brothers William S.T., Thomas, James Lafayette (known as Joe) also lived in the area, William living in Collin Co., Tx. (Farmersville) and Tom and Joe lived nearby Emma and Chris and their sons. Several of Emma's sons and one daughter (who died and is buried in graveyard with her grandfather Sansom in Gadsden-with the Emma Sansom HS near by) were born in Alabama.

I am a Sansom family genealogist, and friend. Emma's great-grandson has given me copies of letters written by Emma to Chris in Tx. when she lived in Alabama, and from Mattie to Emma and family from Alabama.

Emma's mother, and Mattie McKinney are also buried in the same cemetery near Emma and Chris.

Emma's mother, Lemila Vann Sansom, was said to be a niece of Chief James Vann, who was brother of Joseph David Vann, Lemila's father.
