Morgan, John Knox (1802-1881)

John Knox Morgan was born to Samuel Morgan, Jr. and Eleanor Garrison Morgan. Samuel's father, Samuel Morgan, Sr.migrated to Georgia from Pennsyvania and New Jersey, just after the Revolutionary War, in which he served.

John Knox was a descendant of James Morgan, who migrated to the United States from Wales in 1691.

John Knox moved his family to Benton County,Alabama, along with his father, Samuel Morgan, Jr.. They settled northwest of the present site of Piedmont, Al. on Feb. 25, 1851, and was granted 40 acres of land.

John and Margaret then migrated to Texas in 1856, before the Civil War. They traveled to Texas with their children, along with some other migrating families, among them the Phillips family. They were among the first settlers of West Mountain, Upshur County, Tx.

Children were Eliza 1822,William H.1823,Louise Clementine 1825,Harriet H. 1827, Caleb Spencer 1830, Richard Washington 1832, Thomas Crawford 1835, Elizabeth 1837, David McGowna 1839, Pinckney 1844,Eleanor 1845, John 1846.

The Morgan family were well known for their singing ability in the Usphur County area, and "Roe" Morgan had a singing school where the Stamps Brothers, who started the Stamps Quartet, studied.
