Ingram Lineage

Submitted by:  Barbara Rains

James Ingram was born in 1810 in either TN or SC.  (I actually think he was born in SC, but I've seen info others have submitted that said TN.)    In 1832 (I think in SC) he married Nancy Caroline Hodge.  I have some info on her and will add it after family info is listed.  They moved to Chambers County, AL, and had 7 children, then moved on to Upshur County (Gilmer) and had one more.  Both James and Caroline were from prosperous families even though James was listed on the census as a "farmer".  Their daughters never had to wash a dish or make a bed because the family had a number of slaves.   The family moved to Gilmer between 1846 and 1853.

Caroline was the daughter of Benjamin M. Hodge and Margaret Robinson (she was born in 1815 in SC).  Benjamin was born between 1770 and 1780,  married Margaret "Peggy" Robinson, and he died in 1843 in Montgomery, AL.  They had six children. Nancy Caroline was the oldest.  I have very little on their children. They all married in Montgomery, AL, but I don't have death dates for any of them.  I only have names of spouses and dates of marriage.

Margaret "Peggy" Robinson (Caroline's mother) was the daughter of Alexander and Nancy Robinson.    The children of James and Caroline Ingram were:
M.A. Ingram (I think this is Mary), b. 1833, married ?? Walker; Mary was born in Montgomery, Chambers Co., AL :
New Information 5-20-13:  Mary A Walker  Per Ronald Wade - Mary A. Ingram Walker, born in Montgomery, Chambers Co., Alabama, the daughter of James Ingram (born 1810 SC) & Nancy Caroline Hodge Ingram (born 1815 SC).  She married Augustine Walker (1826-1870) & their children included Caroline "Callie" M. Walker (1858 - 20 Jun 1950 married Charles A. Lyford), John E. Walker (1858 ? 1933), Tennie Walker born about 1861, and Makulda Jane "Jennie" Walker (1866 ? 22 Oct 1935, married 18 Oct 1883 in Upshur Co., Tx. to William T. McPeek).
June 30, 1833        July 5, 1905

M.S. Ingram (I think this is Margaret), b. 1835, married Will Darden
John S. Ingram. b. 1837, married Clementine ??. d. in 186?
M.E. Ingram (I think this is Martha), b. 1839, mar. ?? Norris
Sarah Ann Ingram, b. 6 Jun 1840 in Montgomery, AL; mar. Richard William Smith 9 Feb. 1865 in Sulphur Springs, TX; d. 5 Nov. 1913 in Sabathany, Parker Co., TX, and is buried at the Veal Station Cemetery.
Benjamin Ingram, b. 1843
William Jeremiah Ingram, b. 1846, mar. Mollie Patillo, and d. 13 Nov. 1912
Caroline Ingram, b. 1853 in Upshur Co., TX

The third child, John S. Ingram, died during his service in the southern army during the Civil War.

The fifth child, Sarah Ann "Sallie" Ingram, attended college in Sulphur Springs.  It seems logical that others of her siblings also attended college.  Sallie and Richard William "Dick" Smith are my great grandparents.

The seventh child, William Jeremiah, became a U.S. Deputy Marshall.   He married Mollie Patillo, the first white child born in Gilmer.  Her father was G.C. Patillo, the Chief Justice in Upshur County.  G.C. Patillo was from TN.

James Ingram died at 70.  He was a widower.  He lived with his daughter, M.A. Walker, at the time.  He lived in Precinct 1, Upshur.  I don't know where that is and can't find any more information on this family.

Caroline's father left her 6 slaves when he died.  I have a list of their names and ages.  Her husband, James Ingram, left her 5 slaves.  I also have their names
and ages.

Each group of slaves appears to be a family: parents and 4 chn. for the first and parents and 3 chn for the second.  She had a paper drawn up showing that these 11 slaves (which she named) were her separate property.  This was drawn up in Upshur Co., Feb. 6, 1850

That's all I have on this family.  I never seem to be able to find any info on them when I research Upshur Co.
