Notes for JOHN LATCH:
The first Latch family came to America in 1725 from the German town of Christianseck, Wittgenstein (present day Westphalia).  At that time the Latch name was spelled Latsch.  The Latch family left the Port of Rottendam, Netherlands with husband, wife, and six children.  They settled in Pennsylvania where most of the family remained.

John Latch was married to Mary ? and had two sons, William A. and Soloman, that were born in South Carolina as they made their way to Georgia from Pennsylvania.  In the early 1800's, there was a border despute between Georgia and the Carolina's.  At this time, Murray and Gilmer Counties in what is now Georgia were in Cherokee County, North Carolina.  A lottery was used to give away land in this area which in now Georgia.  In 1832, the lottery included what is now Murray Co, GA.  By 1840, the family lived in Gilmer County, Georgia.  In 1950, the family was living in Murray County, Georgia where he and Mary lived the rest of their lives.  They died between 1850 and 1860 between the ages of 66 and 76.

Notes for WILLIAM ALBERT LATCH, SR.:
William and his family lived at the foot of one of the Murray County, Georgia mountians.  Around 1852, a disastrous drought hit that section of Georgia.  William went into the mountains to try to kill some wild meat.  He sensed that an animal was watching, and as he turned to look, a hugh bear sprang at him.  William had no time to grab his nearby gun for the bear was upon him.  He began to slash at the bear with his knife as the animal bit and clawed him.  For some time they fought.  Finally, both of them exhausted, they quit struggling and the bear limped away into the trees.  William, cut, scratched, and mauled, dragged himself down the mountain side to his home.  The men of the neighborhood went to the place of the fight and followed a trail of blood some 50 yards to where a hugh brown bear lay dead.  William died later that night.

Notes for JOHN WESLEY LATCH:
STORY BY BESSIE ELLEN LATCH ROELIG:
After John enlisted and before he was sent to Mississippi, he went AWOL from the company and went home to Rebecca, who was pregnant with Joseph, to tell her that as soon as she had the baby she should leave Georgia and go to Illinois where her brother was, because the South was going to lose the war.  He had lost a lot of weight and was ill.  He then returned to his company and soon left for Vicksburg, Mississippi where he was killed June 20, 1863.

In the spring, after Rebecca gave birth to Joseph, she packed up her belongings and the kids into a wagon and left for Illinois.  They had to travel at night because the Union Soliders were everywhere, and Rebecca walked most of the way.  William, the oldest son, wanted to stay in Georgia, but after the family left, he became worried that his mother and siblings would not make it if he didn't help, so he rode his horse day and night to catch up to them.  He accompanied them the rest of the way to Illinois.  Rebecca stayed with her brother John Swanson in Matoon, IL and was notified in the summer of her husband's death.  Rebecca and the children stayed with her brother until she remarried B. M. Reynolds Nov 4, 1866.

12.  GEORGIA ANN3 LATCH (WILLIAM ALBERT2, JOHN1) was born December 13, 1831 in GA, Murray Co per census & tombstone (1842 per heritage book, and died May 18, 1924 in AL, Morgan Co per tombstone.  She married WILLIS CHILDERS November 24, 1860 in GA, Murray Co per marriage license, son of WILLIS CHILDERS and SARAH FIELDS.  He was born April 12, 1826 in NC per census & tombstone (1833 per 1900 census, and died August 03, 1919 in AL, Morgan Co per tombstone.

Notes for GEORGIA ANN LATCH:
Story from Morgan County Heritage Book about Georgia Ann Latch:  Georgia was doing the washing with water from a spring located at the foot of the old Fort Mountain, near Chatsworth, county seat of Murray County, Georgia, when she heard the family brood sow squealing in panic.

The washing was done at that time by boiling the clothes in lye soap and water, then laying them out on a flat rock and beating them with a flat two-handed weapon called a "battin' stick" to take out the dirt.  When she responded to the sow's squealing she took that weapon along.  She met the old sow coming toward her in the embrace of a bear that was trying to kill her, and swung that old "battlin' stick" at the bear's head, killing it and adding it to the family's meat supply.

Another story has her doing the housework in the morning when she heard a strange dog barking near the house, and looked out the window just in time to see a large deer stag enter the barn, and go into a stall.  Apparently he was exhausted from being chased by the dog.

In her usually forthright manner, she quietly left the house, went to the barn, and closed the door of the stall holding the deer.  Then when Mr. Willis returned home she told him the meat was in the barn, ready for harvest.

Another story was told about her that when she went out to the mountain to work in the fields she didn't take a lunch, but picked out a mouthful of scaly bark hickory nuts, and carried them in her mouth until noon, when she chewed them up and swallowed them.

CHARGED WITH EMBEZZLEMENT

George Latch, one of Hatfield's prominent citizens, was arrested today on a charge of embezzlement.  The complaint was sworn out by John Hutson.

It seems that during Sherriff Johnson's term, he took some horses belonging to a man named Norris who owed some court costs.  The horses were turned over to Mr. Latch who kept then until their feed amounted to $5.00, more than he could sell them for when he disposed of them.

Mr. Huston who was on Norris bond for the cost bill swore out the warrant charging Mr. Latch as above stated, for keeping the money received from the sale.  The case will be tried Nov 3.

Criminal case filed in Fort Smith for Liquor in 1891.

Notes for LOUIS ANDERSON "DADDY" LATCH:
Lewis Anderson Latch apparently has a colorful past.  He was a famous civil war hero in MO and AR according to undocumented stories, and was a sheriff for may years in Latch, Upshur County, TX.  The town was named after him.  When he first moved to Upshur County, TX he opened a saw mill.  During his duties as sheriff, he rode a big white horse.  I hope to visit this area and find documentation on these stories.  A book was written on his life titled "Always a Rebel" by Dr. R. A. Clifton.

Artricle in the book "A BREIF HISTORY OF UPSHUR COUNTY"
                                                        LATCH
In about the year 1900, there was a fine area of timber land lying about eight miles a little to the southwest of Gilmer.  Most of this land belonged to the public schools of Nacogdoches County.  Mr. L. A. Latch came in here about that time and bought up a lot of this land and timber and put in a saw mill and began cutting this fine timber into lumber.  There was an abundance of large, heart timber with trees from two to three feet in diameter.  This lumber was of excellent quality , and houses built back in those days are still standing in almost perfect condition.

This county was all in the woods at that time, with the exception of a few scatered settlements nearby.  There were the Carrols, who lived near what was known as Carrol's Chapel.  The Steelmans lived to the north, near Hopewell church.  A Mr. Steelman ran a horse power cotton gin out on the Gilmer road.

As the timber was cut off this land, it was sold to settlers and a properous farming community was built up.  Some of these settlers were, Tom Bullard, Jim Moore, Giles Steelman, John Earp, the Longs, and many others who helped to build up the Latch community.  Latch got a post office, with a star route, which came from Gilmer around by Calloway and Shady Grove.  Soon a school was erected and later on, Latch had a good school.  Latch at the present time is a properous community.  It has two stores and filling stations that do nice business.

After L. A. Latch cut off all the timber, he went out of the saw mill business, and operated several farms.  Later he went into politics, and served as sheriff of Upshur County for a number of years.  The community was named for Mr. Latch, and everybody in the community loved him.  He was known as "Daddy Latch" and was over 90 years old when he died.

After Mr. Latch went out of the saw mill business, Lark Carrington ran a saw mill at Latch for some time.  Will Mathis ran a gin at Latch for several years, but cotton gins for the past few years have all moved to town.

Dr. Craddock married one of Mr. Latch's daughters and located in the community, where he has lived since, as the community doctor.

The entire Latch school transferred to Harmony, a consolidated school near Rosewood, and is still with that school.  It may eventually consolidate wth Harmony, because they do not have sufficient pupils to do the grade of work they desire.

GILMER MIRROR NEWSPAPER OBITUARY

L. A. Latch Passes Away in 94th Year After Colorful Life
Had Served in Confederate Army; Later Sheriff Here for Eight Years.

By Mrs. R. A. Clifton

At two-thirty on Sunday afternoon, October 30, about a thousand friends gathered at Hopewell Cemetery, one mile from Latch, for the funeral of L. A. Latch, known to, and loved by, the entire county as ?Daddy? Latch.

Louis Anderson Latch was born posthumously (five days following the death of his father) on December 7, 1844, near Augusta, Georgia.  He was the youngest of a family of six sons and two daughters.  He died on Saturday evening, Oct 29, 1938, after an illness of about a week, being 93 years, 10 months, and 22 days old.

Since the small church at Hopewell could not begin to  accommodate the throng of people who came, the benches were moved outside, and the funeral held out in the open.  The simple gray casket, draped with a Confederate flag, stood in a grove of sturdy old oak trees.  Their leaves were tinged with autumn?s rich coloring.  They made a perfect canopy for the last rites of one who had lived an outside life for long, long years.  Close by was the cemetery, neat and clean and precise, a fitting spot for the last bivouac of an old solider.

The funeral oration spoken by Rev. R. A. Clifton of Gilmer, a personal friend and admirer of Daddy Latch, covered the story of his life so aptly and so feelingly, that to review it here will be to give the best obituary possible.

Mr. Clifton began his address by commenting on the appropriateness of conducting this particular funeral out in the open, saying that those who knew well the deceased could not imaging his free sprit confined with walls, averring that his body was not to be laid in the cold tomb, but in the warm earth that he loved.  Mention was made of the unusual life span of this man.  how he had witnessed all the changes that had taken place in the South for almost a century, but not as a spectator; he was an acting part of these movements.

Daddy Latch moved with his family to Arkansas when he was a very small child and in his childhood and youth knew the hardships and dangers of  pioneer life.

At the age of 17 years, he enlisted in the army of the Confederacy, joining the 8th Arkansas calvary under the command of General Joe Shelby.  All six brothers of the Latch family were soldiers in the Confederate Army, two of them died at Shiloh.  Daddy Latch himself was wounded in the head, chest, and leg.  Mr. Clifton related the incident of his surgeon brother having saved his younger brother?s leg from amputation, through resort to what was practically military insubordination.  But there are thousands of friends who are grateful to this determined Dr. Latch, for otherwise we might not have seen Daddy
Latch dancing on the street corners nor have the memory of his dancing at the Yamboree street dance only a year ago.

According to his own statement, the proudest moment of L. A. Latch?s life was the occasion when he was cited for bravery by the Confederate Army following an incident of heroism that provoked cheers, even from his Yankee foes, for him and his faithful mare Dolly.

Following the Civil War, there was a period when Daddy Latch was associated with Cole Younger in bushwhacking  activities and there was a time when he was associated with Jesse James? famous band of outlaws.  Following his break with the James gang, he was successively a stage coach driver, a job he gave up because he was unwilling to testify against a bandit he had thwarted in a hold-up; a steamboat hand where he worked up to a position comparable to that of purser; a deputy sheriff in Arkansas; a Pinkerton detective, a calling he followed with considerable success.

In 1872, L. A. Latch was married to Miss Betty Sweet and to this marriage were born thirteen children.  One child died in infancy.  All the others lived to maturity, but only three of them survived their father.

In 1873, Daddy Latch moved to Upshur County where he became the owner of a saw mill, an extensive land owner, and lived a peaceful, settled life for 25 years.  After he had attained the age that would have seemed old to another, he was elected sheriff of Upshur County and reelected for three additional terms.  His humane treatment of prisoners is one of the legends of this county today.

After 49 years of marriage, his wife died in 1921, she who had been the sweetheart of his youth, the wife of his maturity and the companion of his old age.  Daddy Latch had joined the Baptist Church when he was a youth of 15 years, but later had changed his affiliation to the church of his wife?s faith, the Methodist.

"DEATH OF ANDREW LATCH, THE WINDSOR GAZETTE, MAY 25, 1928"

Andrew Latch was born January 1, 1861, at Spring Place, Georgia.  His parents moved to Illinois when he was small and he has since resided in Shelby County near Trowbridge.  He died Monday afternoon May 21, 1928.  He had been under the doctor's care for some time and his death came suddenly and peacefully from heart trouble.  He leaves his wife and three sons, Elmer, Artie, and Norbert, and two daughters, Mrs. Susie Huffmaster and Mrs. Bessie Elam, besides two brother, Joseph and Phillip Latch and a half brother F. M. Reynolds, all of whom were present at the funeral which was held Wednesday afternoon at Lower Ash Grove Church.  The Rev. Mr. Dudley of Charleston preached the sermon.  There was a very large attendance, showing the respect of an entire community for the quiet unassuming life he had lived amoung them.  He was laid to rest by the side of his first wife, who was Christina Queen, and a son, Ward Latch, who had passed on several years ago.  Many beautiful flowers gave mute evidence of the love of his friends and relatives.

Notes for JOSEPH BAILEY LATCH:
"OBITUARY OF JOSEPH BAILEY LATCH, THE WINDSOR GAZETTE, THURSDAY DECEMBER 8, 1938"

Joseph Bailey Latch a retired mail carrier died at 11:30 o'clock Friday night, December 2 in the home of a son Orvel Latch, about five miles west of Neoga.  He had been ill with a stomach ailment for six months.

General services were held at 2:00 o'clock Monday afternoon in the Lower Ash Grove Church.

Mr. Latch was born December 9, 1862 in Ringo, GA, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Latch.  He came to the Neoga vicinity when still a child.  He was united in marriage to Miss Henrietta Sims December 8, 1884.  She died several years ago.  Surviving are his son Orvel, three daughters, Mrs. Estella Zimmer and Mrs. Cora Storm, both of near Trowbridge and Mrs. Atha Storm of Shelby County;  18 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren.

"TRIBUTE TO J. B. LATCH BY MRS. BEN DOLL, POSTMASTER AT TROWBRIDGE"

A chapter in the early history of the Trowbridge Post Office and rural route was finished Saturday, December 3, 1938, in the passing of J. B. Latch, our first rural carrier.

He served 29 years before reaching retirement age.  Then he was given an extension two different times, until the government felt it was best to give the service over to a younger man, and retired him with a pension for the rest of his days.

He was a familiar figure in his big fur coat with his red cart with every available space filled with mail and his little brown horse Barney.  He traveled almost impassible roads, it being lamp-lighting time many a winter evening before he returned from his route.  He was a friend to old and young alike.  The children always watched for him as his pockets always yielded chewing gum or candy when they were lucky enough to meet him at the mailing box.

Flowers will do him no good, now, but this is my boquet for him.

Joseph was born in Polk County, Arkansas and married Ida Elzona Cheek on January 9, 1897 in Polk County, Arkansas.  They had 8 children (Maudie E., Ira, Bertha, Elton, Marcus, Dona L., Helter, Evertt).  Joseph lived his entire life in Arkansas.

In 1921, a tragedy happened to the Joseph Latch family.  George, his brother who never married, was known  to rustle cattle around the area.  He wore two pearl handled revolvers on his side and looked quit the bandit.  He was very proficient with his pistols, could trill them, flip them into his holster, and draw fast, just like displayed in many western movies.  George would ride his horse around pulling a small flat bed wagon looking for a cow he could butcher and would then peddle the meat.  Joseph turned his brother George in to the grand jury for his thiefs and this lead to ill feelings between the brothers which later lead to a duel between the brothers. As a kid, I use to visit my great grandmother Ida in Arkansas and I always loved the visit.  Even the trips themselves were exciting.  One time I remember a trip where a bridge had washed out and a temporary pontoon bridge was installed.  This bridge was the type used in World War II where each wheel ran in a u-shaped rut and each pontoon was linked with hinges, so as you crossed the river, the car would tip back and forth like a rocking chair.  We make this crossing after dark in a driving rain, so it was very scary, especially for a young boy.

Ida had an old log house with a pot belly stove to keep the house warm, but best of all, she had a feather bed and I loved to sleep in that bed.  It was very warm and cozy.  I use to love to set on the front porch and listen to my great uncles, Helter and Elton, tell hunting stories and listen to the dogs track deer through the woods and around the mountains.  About 100 yards from the house was a creek that ran with clear cool water.  I would play in the rocks alone the creek and drink the cool water and watch the cars ford the creek.

Notes for GEORGE WASHINGTON "WASH" MCKAY:
1910 Census     Montgomery Co, AR (at home
1919 Married     Bertha Latch
1920 Census     (19) Okmulgee Co, OK (wife Bertha
1979 Died          Okmulgee Co, OK

George Washington McKay, son of James Nicholas McKay was born in Mt. Ida, Arkansas in 1900 and was married to Bertha Deora Latch on May 28, 1919 in Polk County, Arkansas and had 5 boys (Olen Carter, Opal Junior, Doyle Ray, Jimmie Marcus, and Lowell Wayne).  George was a farmer and share cropper in the early days and later included a dairy as part of the farming operation.

George and his family moved around a lot, mostly in Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas.  His first son, Olen, was born in Beggs, Oklahoma in 1920.  His second son, Opal, and third son, Doyle, were born in Hatfield, Arkansas in 1922 and 1924.  In 1929, they grew cotton around Grace Mont, Oklahoma.  In 1930, they grew cotton in Texas with his brother James Robert.  During their stay in Texas, their son Jimmie Marcus was born in 1930.  Bertha got real sick afterward and got down to weighing 77 pounds and almost died.  In 1931 and 1932, they farmed in Arkansas where they grew corn and potatoes.  In 1932, after gathering their crop, they sold the corn for $0.10 a bushel and went to town and bought all the boys a new pair of boy scout shoes for $0.98 a pair.  These shoes had to last all winter but were not?t needed in the summer since they all went barefooted.

In the fall of 1932 they moved to Morris, Oklahoma, with the help of an old Model-T Ford.  The kids got to attend school (something they rarely did) at Cold Corner School, located between Morris and Wild Cat Junction, OK.  They continued to move around the Morris area until the fall of 1934.

During one of these moves in 1934, they moved to George?s sister?s place,  Roxie McKay Roberts, and had to live in a tent for a while.  Frank Roberts, Roxie?s Husband, was having trouble getting the Alley Richardson family vacated from the house where George?s family was to live.  Mr. Richardson was taken to court, but still would not move. The sheriff came and removed all the furniture, bedding, and clothing and piled them along the section line road.  Then George?s family moved into the house from the tent.  Of course this made Mr. Richardson very mad, and he bragged around the local neighborhood that someday he was going to whip George for taking his house.  Well, as luck would have it, one day George's sons Olen and Opal were fixing fence around the pasture and George was plowing along the road when Mr. Richardson came along.  George saw him coming and stopped the horse team that was pulling the cultivator and confronted Mr. Richardson about what he had been saying to the neighbors.  Mr. Richardson indicated it was true and at that point George knocked him down.  He then put his knee in his chest and slapped him until he wet his pants.  Mr. Richardson finally told George he had all he could stand, so George helped him up, shook his hand, and told him to be careful about his bragging.  They later became very good friends, visited each others house, cut
each other?s hair, and even shaved each other with straight razors.

In 1935 they moved to Minco, Oklahoma where they lived in a tent and picked cotton for Harry Howery in 1936 and 1937.  In 1938 they rented a place south of Minco and set up farming for themselves.  On this farm is where their son Lowell Wayne was born in 1938.  In the fall of 1938, they moved to Oklahoma, just east of Hoffman in McIntosh County and farmed in 1939.

In the fall of 1939, they moved to a farm just south of Morris where they finally settled down.  During this later time in Oklahoma, almost every Sunday, all his sons, their wives, and his grandchildren would meet at George?s house and have fun.  Every summer the grand kids would help him chop corn or cotton, help pick the cotton, and help bail and store hay for the dairy cattle.
