Earp Cemetery

UPDATE: Per the Texas Historical Commission, there are 25 unmarked burials in this cemetery. Since Col. Earp was moved to Hopewell Cemetery in the Spring of 2008, there should be 24.  Col. Earp’s wife is buried in Rusk County with her relatives.

Thanks to Glenda Kinard for the following information.  No stones are left standing.

The graves that are known are:

Sarah Fenlaw       dau. of J. E. & I. O. Fenlaw
b. 12 March 1879       d. 23 Feb. 1880
Sarah Fenlaw is 3rd of 9 children of Joseph Hugh Fenlaw b. 21 Dec 1846, in VA, d. 12 May 1893 in Upshur County, Texas and Isadora Ophilia Rogers b. 28 Feb 1859 in Upshur County Texas, d. 3 June 1906 in Upshur County, Texas. Parents of Isadora are Peter Rogers b. 13 June 1818 in VA, d. 13 Dec. 1882 and Sarah Earp b. 14 Dec. 1825 in Lawrence County, Alabama, d. 2 Dec 1879 Upshur County Texas. Col. C. R. Earp is Cullen Redwine son of William Earp b. 1800 in GA, d. 23 Feb. or 16 Apr, 1874 in Upshur County, Texas, and Betsy Vaughn b. abt 1800, d.between Jan. & Oct 1837 in Upshur County Texas.. C. R.'s wife was Harriet Emeline Dunkley and he is brother to Sarah Earp Rogers. There may be more Earp family buried there, but no markers. C. R. was also a Col. in civil war and was highly decorated I am told. He may be the one that a family story says is buried in his uniform and with a gold watch and they had to dig him up and rebury him because of grave robbers after the gold watch. Do not know how much truth is in this story.

Note: Col. Cullin Redwine Earp has been relocated to the Hopewell Cemetery.  See pictoral account of his reburial.

Elizabeth 'Betsy' (Grider) Ross, born March 6, 1835 in Kentucky; died November 4, 1893 in Upshur county. Elizabeth was the wife of Hugh Menenol Ross, a Confederate Veteran, buried in Enon Cemetery. She was the daughter of Joseph Morgan Grider and Sarah 'Sallie' (Womack) Grider. She was the mother of nine children; however, only five of those lived to adulthood.

James Ervin Ross, born 1855 in Tennessee; died 1885 in Upshur county. James was the eldest child of Elizabeth Ross and Hugh Menenol Ross. He never married.
