The Lafayette community, named by
early settler Matthew F. Locke for his son, Lafayette
Locke, developed in this area in the 1850s. Locke deeded
three acres of land to the Philadelphia Baptist Church
for a cemetery in 1858. The land, which already
contained two family burials, became known as Lafayette
Cemetery. The oldest documented grave is that of T. E.
Montgomery, Locke's brother-in-law, who died in 1855.
Although the community began to decline in the 1920s,
this and other nearby graveyards serve as visible
reminders of the area's pioneer heritage
Read by Glenda Kinard January 15, 2001
Graciously submitted by the Upshur
County Historical Commission in an joint effort to get
all the cemeteries in Upshur County compiled in a book
and on the internet. Thank you Bill Starnes.
UPDATE: Cemetery completely
photographed Jun 2008 by Geraldine Little Braswell and
Sandy Spann to update this cemetery listing.
As hard as we all try, we are human
and sometimes when reading a cemetery we miss a grave
covered with leaves, fireants, or bushes. Sometimes the
headstone has sunk and is mostly underground. Our area
also has many graves only marked with iron ore rocks and
even many unmarked graves. There are headstones that
have long ago been destroyed by the elements or even
vandalizm, and are hard to impossible to read the
details. We would appreciate it if you would let us know
if you did not find your relative which was buried
here, and would appreciate your
letting us use the information you know about them. With
the combined efforts of us all, we can make the Upshur
County website bigger and better.
Thanks to Karen Mensch for the use
of her pictures.
Thanks to Barbara for sending
in the Wittebort pictures.

Per Ronald Wade - Thomas J. Black,
Born in Jackson Co., Ga., the son of
Absolom H. Black (1810 – 1870)
and Virginia Hayes born
about 1817 although these birth dates of his parents may
be wrong. He was the brother of George H. Black
buried in Gilmer Cemetery (Old Section). He
married 13 Jan 1848 in Fulton Co., Ga. to Mary
Jane Camp ( born about 1831)
and their children included Fannie Black
(1858 – 1915) William Camp Black (1862 – 1943). Following Mary's
death he married in 1870 in Upshur Co., Tx. to
Sarah L. Montgomery (1828 – 1895) and
their children included Walter Thomas Black (1873 – 1956) and Lula Black born about 1875. Both brothers,
George H. Black and Thomas J. Black served in Co. G,
16th Georgia Infantry in the Civil War under Capt. A.C.
Thompson.
Blythe, Eula Alice (Sewell
Lindsey) Complete
name is Eula Alice Blythe Sewell Lindsey. Blythe is not
her maiden name, it is part of her given name. She should
be buried under either Sewell or Lindsey, but neither of
those names appear to have ever been put on the
headstone. Daughter of
Henry Levi Sewell Jr. (1845-1918) & Ora Alice

B/o Matthew Harrison Couch
Per Ronald Wade - John Marion
Couch, born in Laurens, SC, the son of Mathew
Couch (born 1811 SC) and Louisa Couch (born about 1815
SC). He married 10 Feb 1850 in Kingston, Bartow Co.,
Ga. to Mary Jane Kay (1834 SC –
1901 Kaufman Co., Tx.). Their children included
John Washington Couch born about 1853, William Marion
Couch born about 1855, Julia Ann Couch born about 1858,
Mary May "Missie" Couch born about 1860, Samuel Harrison
Couch born about 1866, Louisa Ella Couch born about
1868, Nancy Caroline "Callie" Couch born about 1869,
David Pinkney Couch and Emma Delilah Couch.
John Marion Couch was a Blacksmith by trade. He
lived most of his adult life in Texas, Upshur/Camp
County. Curing the Civil War he enlisted in Co. D
33rd Arkansas Infantry. Because of his abilities in
iron and wood he worked in the Confederate shop in
Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Moved to Texas after the war, in
1868. He raised his family on what was eventually
known as "Couch Mountain". Died in Camp County,
Texas.
