The Little Mound Cemetery is situated in the lovely piney woods of East Texas 12 miles west of Gilmer, Texas, in Upshur County on FM Road 49, just 1/4 mile east of the intersection of FM 49 East and FM 1002. The cemetery is fenced, well kept, and is adjacent to the attractive white frame structure of Little Mound Missionary Baptist Church. On April 2, 1978, the church celebrated it's 100th anniversary and the state historical marker for the church and the cemetery was dedicated.

The cemetery originated in the community of Old Calloway, which was one of the earliest settled in Upshur County, and saw many travelers going to and from Jefferson by wagon. Old Calloway consisted of a post office (as early as 1857), cotton gin, sawmill, blacksmith shops, saloons, jug shop, and several other business houses. According to the 1890 census the population numbered 103. The story is widely told of a family which was passing through and while camped there a small child died and was buried on the hill at Little Mound where the cemetery is today. It is believed to have been the first burial and to have occurred in the 1860's or early 70's because there were already numerous graves in the cemetery when the church was organized in 1878. Although the child's grave is unmarked and cannot be located, there is one marked grave, that of Elizabeth Rosalin Tutt Finney Hoggue, who was born December 31, 1833 and died October 22, 1877. There are many graves marked with stones or concrete blocks in the original part of the cemetery (located north of the church) as well as many that are marked with unique or elaborate headstones. The later cemetery addition ( located west of the church) contains modern monuments in excellent condition.

Buried in the Little Mound Cemetery is Confederate heroine Emma Sansom (Mrs. C. B.) Johnson as well as veterans of the Spanish American War, the Civil War, World War I, World War II, and the Korean Conflict.
