UPDATED:  Complete reading with pictures Oct. 2008 submitted by Geralding Little Braswell & Sandy Spann.

This cemetery  was recorded November 5, 1998 by Lois Dacus and Joyce Johnson. Submitted by the Upshur County Historical Commission. Thanks also go to Maribeth Buce and Barbara Weiss for a previous partial reading that we combined with the Upshur County Historical Commission reading.

Some pictures submitted by Sharon Pierce, Jane Eubanks, Jane Horn & Larry Coulter.

Thanks to Aleta Speir McFadin for more history on Morris Cemetery!
My grandfather (John Speir) and later my father (John Cosby Speir) were on the cemetery board and tended the cemetery. Grandpa told me the story of the cemetey and the "unkown soldier". He knew the Morris family from 'way back' and they told him the "unknown soldier"s name was Dunn (first name lost). He was returning from battle (Civil War) on his way home to Tennessee when he became ill and the Morris family took him in and cared for him. When he died the Morris family buried him on their property and thus began the Morris Cemetery. This would date the Morris Cemetery to approx. 1867-9.

Thanks to Foy Hunter for sending in this bit of history on Morris Cemetery!
The Cemetery has always owned it's own land and is fenced off.  There use to be an inner fence within the outer fence (inner fence no longer exists) that sectioned off an unused portion on the eastern side of the Cemetery ... that unused eastern portion was used by the Hunters to raise watermelons which in turn cut down on the maintenance on the Cemetery grounds.  Morris Cemetery is located adjacent to my Grandfather's and Grandmother's old property in Pritchett (my Grandfather is buried in the Hunter Cemetery in Longview along with his first wife... and my Grandmother, his second wife, is buried in Morris Cemetery in Pritchett.  When the Dundee Angus Home in Longview was sold by the Hunter's in 1909, the Pritchett property was purchased and is where they relocated ... adjacent to the Morris Cemetery. I can only assume that the Cemetery was there in 1909 ...  There is a shelter on the Cemetery property and my Dad told me that whenever someone passed away, a big bell hanging under the shelter use to be rung and my Grandfather would send him to help the men dig the grave.  This property adjacent to the Cemetery belongs to my cousins now.

Aug 1, 1885: Two acres of land south of the road was purchased from Clara C Starr and Jas. F (Starr?) by trustees:  J B Craig, J J Morris and A Crigler for the Morris graveyard.

Apr 14, 1933: The old Suffolk School ground containing 2 acres north of the road was purchased from trustrees of  Upshur Co., Texas for parking area and to build a shed for funeral gatherings.  Trustees: W B Craig, B F Jordan, and Carl Willeford.

Mar 10, 1975: The Morris Cemetery Association was formed with Articles of Incorporation and by-laws.  Trustees: J Cosby Speir, Joyce Johnson, J L Hunter, Homer Mings, Bruce Watts, Pete Massey, and Gordon Gilbert.

Mar 1, 1998: In appreciation for flagpole and memorial:  Howard Glass, E S Truitt, Bruce Watts, Eugene Johnson, O M McKnight, Carlton and Lois Dacus, Jeff and Joyce Johnson.

There are numerous unmarked graves with just native rock markers and many broken headstones, one headstone just says "Sister".
