Secretary of War Letter to Mrs Cecile Willeford

Thanks go to Nina Campbell for sending in this letter from her personal files. Below is the actual scanned letter and the transcribed letter. Please note the address of Mrs Willeford. She was a widow with all her sons away fighting and was not living in  her Upshur County home during the war.

The Secretary of War
Washington

September 6, 1944

Dear Mrs Willeford,

Even in war time the opportunity is not given to many of us to make the personal sacrifices that you are making in giving the services of your four sons to the armed forces of this country.

Records of the War and Navy Departments lists them on active duty as follows:

Paul T Willeford   AUS
Sidney G Willeford    AUS
Harold F Willeford   USN
Leonard S Willeford   USN

You will be glad to know that they are setting a record of loyalty and devotion to duty of which you may feel proud indeed.

Permit me to extend to you my deep appreciation and that of the War Department for the spirit you have manifested and for the substantial contribution you are making to our eventual victory.

Very sincerely yours,

Henry L Stinson
