August 18, 1865
 

Following the Civil War, a committee met in Gilmer, Upshur County, on August 12, 1865,
this committee was composed of:

J H Trowell
Lewis Crain (could be Crain Lewis)
James M Amoss
R S Darden
W C Henley
H H Bonner
J K Edwards
J R White
A B Denton

This committee met to propose respect for the authority of the US Government and rendering
"cheerful obedience to the Laws."

A recommendation to Hon. A J Hamilton, Provisional Governor of the State of Texas (appointed by Andrew Jackson) was made for the following appointments:

M D Rogers, Esq.     Judge of the 6th Judicial District

C C Galloway     District Attorney

and for County officers:

J M Simpson  Chief Justice

G E Warren  County Clerk

C C McCormick District Clerk

Joseph Steelman Sheriff

E R Dodson  County Treasurer

W E Simpson  Assistant Treasurer and Collector
