John David Catlett Letter

This letter was printed in the July 2001 Jackson County (GA) Historical Society Newsletter. The letter was written February 10, 1916 by John David Catlett, and addressed to the Jackson Herald Newspaper in Georgia. Mr. Catlett was a resident of Big Sandy at the time of writing his letter. Further research of Mr. Catlett found that he lived to be nearly 92 years of age. He was born 15th Jan 1839 in Jackson County, GA and migrated to Upshur County. He and his first wife, Mary L.Mangum Catlett, are listed in the 1910 Upshur County census records. In May of 1913, J. D. Catlett married second to Mrs. Nancy West who died on the 3rd of Oct 1917 and is buried in Hopewell Cemetery.  Mr. Catlett is then found in 1920 residing in the home of his niece and nephew J.D. and Mary J. Miller of Upshur County. In 1930 Mr. Catlett is found as a resident of the Texas Confederate Home located in Austin,  Texas. John David Catlett died on the 20th Nov 1930 and is buried in Pleasant  Hill Cemetery.
