1882 Knight-Wade Land Transaction Letter

Letter written by Thomas Jefferson Knight, Born: 27 JUN 1827, Paris, Bedford Co., TN, and Died: 31 JAN 1892 near Enon in Upshur, TX, to his son-in-law, Whitfield Anthony Wade, Born: 23 NOV 1847 in Auraria, Lumpkin, Georgia, and Died: 23 JAN 1928 in Rosewood, Upshur, Texas making a proposition for the sale of land in the Enon-Grice area. This is of particular interest in that this is Mr. Knight writing a proposition to his son-in-law and signed also by Mr. Wade's wife, Mirah Elizabeth Knight, (Thomas Jefferson Knight's daughter), Born: 10 OCT 1855 Enon, Upshur Co., Texas Died: 10 OCT 1885 Rosewood, Upshur Co., as well as Mr. Wade's 2nd wife after the death of Mirah, Area Addie E. Knight Born: 13 OCT 1863 Enon, Upshur, TX, Died: 24 JUL 1929 Rosewood, Upshur, TX, who is also the daughter of Thomas Jefferson Knight. She signed it as A. E. Gear as she was the widow of Leonard G. Gear. J. T. Bryce who signed was the widower of another daughter of T.J. Knight, Mary Jane Knight Born: 20 JUN 1860 in Upshur Co. Texas, and Died: 7 OCT 1880 in Upshur Co. James Turner Bryce was Born: 1850 in Carroll, Georgia, and Died in 1892 in Texas. One of the other signatures is a son of T. J. Kngiht, George W Knight Born: 1854 in Upshur, TX, and is Probably buried at Hester Farm Cemetery, Upshur Co where his wife is documented to be buried. and the final signature is another son, James Jefferson Knight Born: 16 MAR 1852 in Upshur, TX, and Died: 29 NOV 1918 in Mcmillan, Marshall, OK. The "Henry" mentioned is probably yet another son of T.J. Knight, Henry Milton Knight Born: 6 NOV 1875 in Upshur Co., TX, and Died: 3 MAY 1933 in Caddo Mills, Hunt, TX., who must have already claimed part of the property when T.J. Knight's wife, Marthan Ann Sanders Knight, died 14 Feb 1880.

Letter Transcription:

July the 31st 1882

Mr. W. A. Waid, Sir I received your communication by the hand of Mr. T. J. Hurt and after mature deliberation I have come to the conclusion of making you the folowing propsition with the folowing conditions 1st you to let the trade with Mr. Grider remain as is the title to remain as they are and you take the notes against Grider for the land and collect them and 2nd the land belonging to Ben at his mother’s death and the increase of the same shall not be considered in the community property 3rd that I shall retain the use of all the improved land for the years 1881 and 1882 to pay for expenses and improvements 4th I propose the land as follows to wit the accompanying plot showing the lines commencing and the north line of the said land where the branch running west of the house I live in crosses the line running in south direction with said branch to the south line of the said plot thence east with the said south line for compliment of 160 acres that being one half of the survey 5th an equal division of he perishable property that was on hand all the fair same propositions I respectfully submit to you and ask an amediate answer and if you are agreed then you will proceed to court and have commissioners make the division.
