Adkison, Altha Lee Patterson GILMER - Services for Altha Lee Patterson Adkison, 88, of Longview, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 5, 2007, at Croley Funeral Home Chapel in Gilmer. Burial will follow in Enon Cemetery. Mrs. Adkison passed away after a prolonged illness on Thursday, August 2, 2007, at a nursing home in Longview. Altha was born May 5, 1919, in Upshur County, to Jack Monroe Patterson and Sarah Jane "Totsie" Fielden Patterson, and she grew up in the Brumley Community. She attended local schools and graduated from Union Hill High School. She married Ben Adkison of the Bettie Community in 1939. Altha was a homemaker and worked in defense plants during World War II. She attended Good Shepherd Hospital LVN School and graduated second in her class. Mrs. Adkison was awarded LVN Association Nurse of the Year and retired in 1984, after 20 years of service, as a senior LVN. She was a lifelong Baptist and member of Greggton Missionary Baptist Church. Altha loved to travel, making trips to Israel, Great Britain, Hawaii, Alaska, different parts of Canada and many areas in the lower 48 states. She loved to tend her flowers and cook, and she was frequently modifying recipes on her first attempt. Mrs. Adkison loved her friends at church, the LVN Association and the Green Street Senior Center, and she maintained friendships dating back to her childhood. Mrs. Adkison is survived by her only child, Ben Michael Adkison of Longview, and his significant other, Bonnie Benson; nieces, Louden Starr of Hallsville, and Narcene Marsh and husband, Dencil; and many other nieces and nephews.
