Gilmer newspaper dated 6 Feb., 1940: MR. U.W. (UP) COX Pioneer Citizen Died Monday Night One of the counties best known and most highly respected citizens passed away at eleven fifteen o'clock Monday night in the person of Mr. U.W. (Up) Cox. Death came to him after only a short illness, at his home about eight miles south of Gilmer, in the crossroads community. The late Mr. Cox was 82 years, 9 months, 16 days old. Until recently had always enjoyed the best of health, and actively engaged in his avocation of farming. Living with him were his daughter Mrs. Jessie Hill and family. He is survived by the following other children: Messrs. Sid, Emerson & Ezra Cox. Mrs. Willis McGee, Mrs, Dick Atkinson, Mrs. Arthur Vessel. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at CrossRoads Baptist Church of which Mr. Cox has been a long time member, internment was at the cemetery.
