Cumbie Sr., Ray A. GLADEWATER -- Services for Ray A. Cumbie Sr., 76, of Gladewater, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 24, 2007, at the Gladewater First Baptist Church, with the Reverend Ellis Hayden and the Reverend Aubrey Pate officiating. Burial will be in Gladewater Memorial Park. Ray loved his church, of which he was a member for 53 years. He served the congregation of First Baptist Church as a deacon since 1966. Ray was also active in his community as Jaycee of the Year 1967, and as a long time member of the Lions Club. Ray retired from GTE/Verizon in 1990, after 42 years of service, but was most content with tending his cows on his Union Grove farm or working on his rental properties. He was preceded in death by his parents, Morgan and Vivian Cumbie; and brother, Charles Cumbie. Ray was devoted to his family, including his wife of 53 years, Colleen Cumbie of Gladewater; daughter, Teresa Cumbie Johnson and her husband, Ralph Johnson, of Dallas; daughter, Mary Anne Cumbie of Houston; son, Ray Cumbie Jr., and granddaughter, Kindra Cumbie, both of Gladewater; sister-in-law, Joyce Cumbie, and nephews, Charles and David Cumbie, all of Magnolia; aunt, Ethel Cumbie of Grand Saline; brother-in- law, Wayland Payne and his wife, Norma, of Orange; sister- in-law, Linda Crump and her husband, James, of Bridge City; and numerous other nieces and nephews.
