Obit posted Potter Co., TX Miles D. King GILMER - Miles D. King, 74, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999. Services will be at 11 a.m. today in Upshur County Civic Center with Mac Wright officiating. Burial will be in Piedmont Cemetery by Turner Brothers Funeral Home of Gilmer. Mr. King was born in Gilmer where he was a longtime resident. During World War II, he served with the Navy aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Tulagi, in European and Asiatic waters. He attended Valley View High School and trade school at Valley View then went to California. After returning to Upshur County, Mr. King drove a school bus for Valley View High School from 1953 until 1955. In 1985, he retired as an inspector after 30 years with Lone Star Steel Co. In 1986, he was appointed to the Gilmer city council. In 1987, Mr. King was elected to the city council where he served several terms. A former member of the East Texas Human Development Corp., he helped obtain the local site for the Head Start Program. Mr. King chaired the city Neighborhood Improvement Committee and the Upshur County Appraisal District's condemnation board. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans, Selective Service Board and the Civic Center committee. Mr. King was a member and instrumental in obtaining a building for the Valley View Church of Christ. He was a former elder of Cypress Street Church of Christ. He married Ruby Turner in 1949.
