Machen, Lola GILMER -- Funeral services for Lola Machen, 93, of Gilmer, will be 4 p.m. Thursday, October 5, 2006, at Grubbs-Loyd Funeral Home Chapel in Gilmer, with the Rev. Wayne McKay, pastor of Oak Hill Missionary Baptist Church, officiating. Former Oak Hill pastor, the Rev. Paul Knight, will assist. Interment will be in Gilmer City Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Grubbs-Loyd Funeral Home in Gilmer. Mrs. Machen passed away Saturday, September 30, 2006, at Upshur Manor Nursing Home in Gilmer, where she had been since February. She was born June 25, 1913, in Kosciusco, Mississippi, to Will and Julia Ann Kinel. The family moved to Upshur County in 1917, and settled in the Concord community, north of Gilmer. Mrs. Machen attended Union Ridge School and was a devoted member of the Oak Hill Church, where she served as Sunday school secretary for many years. Lola Kinel married Chester Machen in 1936. The Machens resided on the Cherokee Trace, northwest of Lake Gilmer. Lola was a homemaker, seamstress, and avid gardener, always willing to share the bounties of her large flower and vegetable gardens with friends and neighbors. She was probably best known for her delicious fried apple pies, which were a delicacy widely in demand at many Gilmer institutions. Lola was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Machen in 1973. She was also preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Willie B. Fuller, Gladys Robinson, Loyce Williams, and Bertie Mae Grable; and a brother, Fred Kinel. Survivors include her one sister, Velma Kinel Robinson of Las Vegas, Nev.; a brother, Ben Kinel of Branson, Mo.; and two nephews, Terry Grable of Las Vegas, Nev., and Olan Dale Williams of Salt Lake City, Utah. Pallbearers will be Danny Patterson, Tom Davis, Joe Cox, Mickey Davidson, Doug Johnson, and Cheyenne Johnson. Memorial contributions in memory of Lola may be made to the Oak Hill Missionary Baptist Church Building Fund at P.O. Box 1437, Gilmer, TX 75644. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday evening, October 4, 2006, at Grubbs-Loyd Funeral Home in Gilmer. Published in the Longview News-Journal on 10/3/2006.
