GLADEWATER MEMORIAL PARK - UPSHUR COUNTY GLADEWATER - Peggy Colvin McGinnes went to be with her Lord and Savior on April 14, 2009, after losing a long and tiring battle with cancer. Peggy was a member of the Church of Christ. Peggy graduated from White Oak High School and always felt close to her school, classmates and community. At times, she referred to East Texas as the "oil patch" in a most respectful manner. Peggy impresses her parents with the ability to express herself through her drawings at an early age. Cognizant of her natural ability, her parents enrolled her in painting classes. She was a scholarship student of the Washington School of Art and she was a constant winner of awards with her oil paintings as her technique matured. The beauty of East Texas served as an inspiration for many of her landscapes that grace people's homes. Peggy migrated to Houston where she found an outlet for her unlimited energy and talent. As her ability and following grew, Peggy successfully operated her own art gallery in northwest Houston for several years. She was a member of local and national art associations. She served as secretary of the Bayou City Branch of the National League of American Pen Women. However, the "country" called her home and she moved to a ranch in Brenham, Texas, with her husband John McGinnes. In Brenham, Peggy spent the rest of her life devoted to her Art Gallery in Brenham, teaching painting, and was commissioned to render portraits of many Texas families. Peggy expand her mastery of artistic media to include acrylic, silk screen and stained glass. Her desire to expand her horizons was never satisfied. As a result, her body of work will be admired and appreciated forever in the homes of people who treasure her art. Peggy was preceded in death by her father, Rex Colvin; stepfather, Watt Graham; mother, Shirley Graham; and brother, Charles Colvin. Peggy is survived by her three children, Mary Ann McDowell of Gladewater, Jerri Loomis and Cole Hall of Houston; five grandchildren, Lila Carlsen, Anna McDowell, Shauna McDowell, Jillian Loomis Taylor and John Loomis; one great-grandchild, Zachary Taylor; brother, David Colvin of Gladewater; and sister, Peggy McCoy of Texarkana. Graveside services will be held today, April 16, 2009, in Gladewater Memorial Park, with Todd Clifton officiating.
