GLADEWATER MEMORIAL PARK - UPSHUR COUNTY GLADEWATER - Glenn 'Wade' Pointer, 78, of Prattville, Ala., and former longtime resident of Longview, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side Saturday, March 5, 2011. Wade was born in Gregg County, Texas, on March 20, 1932, the seventh child born to the late Charles and Addie Pointer. He attended primary school in Sabine and then moved to Longview. Wade graduated from Longview High School with the class of 1950 as one of Maco Stewart's "boys" and remained an active member of the Lobo Alumni Association. For four years, he served his country with distinction in the U.S. Navy during the Korean war. He then attended and graduated from Texas A & M University. Through high school, the Navy, and at A & M (under Coach Bear Bryant), Wade loved playing football and remained an avid fan. In October 1953, he met and married the love of his life, Joy Alexander. They shared 35 wonderful years together until Joy's passing in 1989. Wade was also preceded in death by his grandson, James Mark Rayburn; his parents; and six siblings. Wade was a longtime member of the First Christian Church of Longview, where he served as an elder, and a pioneer member of the Cornerstone Sunday School class, enabling him to acquire many lifelong friendships. Wade's work moved him to many states, but he was always a Texan through and through. After retiring as an operations manager for Fluor Daniel, Inc., Wade enjoyed volunteering at the Longview Cancer Center, delivering Meals on Wheels, and helping with the Bethany Home. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Joyce Pointer; his children and spouses, Cheryl and David Jones, Mark and Tina Pointer, and DeAnna and Curt Carli; seven grandchildren, Jonathan, Jordan, and Josiah Rayburn; Daila and Joseph Pointer; Casey and Cameron Carli; one great-grandchild, Trinity Pointer; and his beloved red dachshund, Cricket. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 10, 2011, at Croley Funeral Home in Gladewater, Texas. A memorial service will be held at the First Christian Church of Longview on Friday, March 11, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. Pallbearers will be his six grandsons.
