These are some early schools, mainly private, in Upshur County. 


Big Sandy Normal Institute - 1883 - J. M. Brown, principal - Probably the first school in Big Sandy.

Christian School - 1880's - Run by Charlie Christian

Coffeeville Academy - Ca 1857 - Rev. Stokeley R. Chadick, a Cumberland Presbyterian minister, established it. 

Concord School - 1880's - Run by Toll Buie

East Mountain School - 1880's - Run by Tom Jones

Enon Academy - 1893 - J. W. Wade principal

Floyd School - Run by Mrs. Eugenia Greer Floyd in the Glenwood area.

Gilmer Female College - 1856 - Rev. David Stovall as teacher, succeeded by Mrs. Martha Weathered and her daughter Margaret

Gilmer High School - 1882 - Prof. W. S. Burk - J. P. Hart and Mrs. I. J. Greer were teachers in the school. Mrs.E. O. Kelly and Miss Lena Kelly
taught music.  M. P. Mell taught Latin & Greek.

Gilmer Masonic Female Institute - Thought to be the first in Upshur County - Sponsored by the Methodist Church in Gilmer and taught by Mrs. L. V. Montgomery

Glenwood School - 1869 - Run by Rev. W. H. McClelland

Leroy's Institute - Taught by Prof. Gilbert Leroy

Lone Star Academy - 1884 - Formerly the Gilmer High School - J. P. Hart and M. P. Mell as principals.

Looney School - 1861-1870 - This seemed to be the best known school and was run by Morgan Looney.

Martinburg School - 1880's - (Area now known as Mattinburg)  In present day Camp County.

Moncrief School - 1880's - Run by Miss Naomi Moncrief

Murry Institute - The first boarding school in Upshur County - It was located close to the present day Ore City Cemetery, with a historical marker present.  Joshua Clark and William L. Coppedge started the school and other teachers were Virgil DuBose and W. B. Bailey.

O'Byrne's Mill School - 1880's - Later moved to Union Grove

Parson McCelland School - Formerly known as Glenwood School.  Burned in 1876 and was not rebuilt.

Rock Point School - 1880's - Run by Miss Irene Hart (later Mrs W F Glass)

Shady Grove School - 1884 - C. B. Reader started the school.  A. F. Shepperd later became a teacher.
