MURRAY INSTITUTE AUTOGRAPH BOOK
This book belonged to Mary (Manie) Louisa Stone and was done in 1861. Murray League Institute was in Upshur County in the area that is now known as Ore City. Murray League School (Institute) was open from 1853 to sometime after the Civil War in that area. Even though Mary's family lived in Harrison County, they sent Mary and her sister Caroline (Callie) Elizabeth to the Murray League School. Kindly donated to us by Beth Meriwether, the great granddaughter of Mary Louisa Stone.

Mary Louisa Stone was the daughter of Absalum Benjamin Stone & Sarah Hood Stone.  About 1849-1850 they moved to Jonesville, Harrison Co. TX from Montgomery Co. AL.   Her maternal grandparents also came to Harrison Co.  in the late 1840s and they were Henry Meriwether Hood & Mary M. Hood.  The Hoods and Stones were planters and were very wealthy.  Some time after the Civil War started the Hoods and the Stones moved to Austin & Washington Counties.  I have been told that after Murray closed that Mary Louisa (Manie) was sent to the school in Mansfield, LA.  I don't know how long she stayed there because there was a big battle in Mansfield and the school was used as a hospital.  In 1867 she married Dr. George Washington Bryan in Buckhorn, Austin Co. TX.  They are buried in the Campbell Cemetery in the Drane Community not far from Corsicana in Navarro County.

These are scans of the original pages. They will take longer to load, but it is well worth the wait! Please be patient and enjoy these wonderful pages that were written in the style of the mid 1800's.
