Comments: Robert P. Callahan was a 4th Sargent in Co. "C", 21st Brig Texas State Troopers--1862-1863. He signed on from Denton Co and was released there after his term of service.   At the time of  disbandment
in Jan 15, 1863, he was described as being 44 years of age,  5  ft. 8 1/2 in. tall, fair complextion, and a stock raiser.
On or about Sept 8, 1870, church records from the Enon Baptist Church in Upshur Co, Texas show that R.P. was excluded (or dropped) from the membership roll.  This was usually done when a member moved or died so that the paper work could be closed out. R.P. died in Lewisville, Tx. earlier in 1870 and the notation by the church record may reflect that event.  His headstone is an oblong piece of rough cut stone slab about 5 ft long, 2 1/2 ft wide, and 5 in. thick.  The stone lays flat on the ground and is broken into two pieces.   His name "R. P. Calahan" (with a backward "n") is scratched into the surface on the left hand side.  Next to it is the Masonic symbol.  On the right hand side is a crude picture scratched into the stone and looks like a house.  None of the family knows if this was done at the time of burial. Florence Callahan was married 3 times.  She married third husband, James
Travis Reed, about Feb 2, 1896.  The family is not sure if the wedding was in Texas or Oklahoma. On the 1870 Upshur Co.,TX census, William Callahan was listed with the family of his uncle, Christopher Columbus Reynolds.  The family does not know what happened to him and no record of him could be located.  It is
thought he may have died sometime during the 1870s. Alphonso A. Callahan married his first cousin, Charlotte Reynolds.  He always said they never had any children because they feared genetic problems. Amanda Callahan was married 3 times. She married her third husband, John F. White, on Nov 22, 1905 in Franklin Co., Texas.
Robert Steven Callahan was a farmer in Upshur Co., Texas.  In the late 1880s, he moved his family to Callahan to farm.  His brother, Alphonso, and his brother-in-law, Gideon Howell, went with him.  The summer of 1911, dissatisfied with Callahan Co. and unable to make a living, Steve moved his family back to Upshur Co., Texas for a few years.  About 1919, he followed his son, Alphoso "Fonnie" Callahan to Childress, Texas and remained there until his death.
