Richard McDowell Johnson "RMDJ" Elliott was born in County Down, Ireland in 1767 and died in Bowie County, Texas in 1853.  He landed in this country at Charleston, South Carolina.  In 1801 he married Jane McCullough Chisholm, the widow of Alexander Chisholm in St Mary's, Georgia by a Presbyterian minister from Ireland, Rev. Thomas Arnold.  Jane, 1781-1856, was the daughter of Captain David McCullough, 1738-1795, who commanded a private ship, "The RattleSnake", sailing out of Port Philadelphia during the Revolutionary War.  There is a special marker on her grave, placed there by the DAR.  RMDJ and Jane Elliott are buried in the Elliott Cemetery, about 2 miles north of Old Union.

RMDJ and Jane had eleven children and one step-son David McCullough Chisholm, born 1798, who came to Bowie County in 1834 and never married.  In 1850, David Chism lived near DeKalb and owned 1800 acres of land.  RMDJ was a member of the Masonic Lodge.  A recent speaker for the New Boston Genealogy Society stated that all Anglo-American pioneer men were members of the Masonic Lodge and that their records could be found in Waco at the Masonic Temple. In 1850 RMDJ was 82 years old and gave his occupation as Methodist Minister.  He was one of the first Methodist ministers in Bowie County.

The eleven children of RMDJ and Jane Elliott were:
 1. Richard Johnston, 1802-1814, buried in Ante, Mississippi
 2. Jane Kliza, 1804-1866, buried at St Mary's, Georgia
 3. Mary Ann, 1805-1876, married Samual Robbins.  She was living with Bertram E Elliott as a widow in 1870.
 4. Emily, 1809-after 1860, married William J Hays.  In 1850 he owned 807 acres and was a farmer.  In 1860 four Epperson children were living with them
 5. Bertram/Bertrand Ewell, 1811-after 1870, married Lucretia/Lucilla Bolton.  He was a merchant in 1850.  They had at least seven children and moved to
     Texas from Tennessee after 1840
 6. William Alexander, 1814-1852, may not have married.  Lived in same household with his parents in 1850.
 7. Frances Evelind, 1817-before 1860, married Caro/Cario/Cass Epperson.  1850 census shows him owning 8480 acres of land.  Had at least seven children
     which were left orphans in the late 1850's
 8. Matilda Brown, 1819-1820, buried in Woodville, Mississippi
 9. Sarah Angelina, 1821-1864, married John M Kimble/Kimbell/Kimball.  He owned 500 acres of land in 1850 and was a blacksmith.  They had a hotel in
     DeKalb in 1860.  They had at least six children
10. Cornelius Jane, 1821-1895, married Richard T/P Lumpkin in 1854, had at least three children.  Richard Limpkin, 1819-1900 was born in Tennessee
11. This child's name was not recorded in the family records given to the library.

In the material given to the New Boston Library, there was a map of the Elliott Cemetery giving the names of family members that are buried there.  There are also several pages of descendants.
