John Cross
Two of his children, John Sidney Cross and Cara Louella Cross Raney, settled in Bowie County. The New Testament title page is located after the Family Record Section of the Bible. On the 3rd page of the Family Records section is listed the birth of H. C. Cross in 1830. He was the father of John Sidney "Sid" Cross of Bowie Co.(1) John Sidney Cross with granddaughter Vivian Heflin, dtr of Otho and Josie, taken about 1925.
(2) Sid Cross with his three daughters, Josie Heflin Megason, Maudie Mae Dillard, and Susie Johnson. Taken at Daniel's Chapel about 1925.
These photos were taken at the family cabin in Daniel's Chapel. Two of my cousins, Morris Dillard and Loyd Dillard, now own the old family place.

The picture shows from left to right Susie and Josie Cross dtrs of "Sid" Cross, and Edna and Carrie Alford. Mother recalls that her baby sister, Maudie and Maggie Alford, infant sister of the Alford girls, were left in the care of Josie's mother while Maudie Alford, mother of Edna and Carrie, took the four girls to "Uncle Will Dosh" to have the picture made. He used an old camera with a hood over his head and to get to his place they walked down a long dusty road. The date must have been about 1808/1809 since Mother was born in 1906 and her baby sister in 1908. "Uncle Will" told the girls to "Watch the Birdie", so Josie was really looking for that bird! A copy of this picture was in the New Boston paper in the early 1970s. Of the four girls, Susie married Clifton Johnson, Josie married first to Otho Heflin, Edna married a Brewer and Carrie married a Megason.
