Ray Wingren was born in the town of Burnet, on April 30th, 1882, the day the Austin & Northwestern Railway ran its first train into this place. There was a great celebration in town that night, but Mr. Wingren is modest and admits it was over the arrival of the railroad and not in honor of his appearance. Immediately after the United States entered the World War, Mr. Wingren volunteered his services. He was sent to the first training camp at Leon Springs, near San Antonio, and at its close was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. He served over seas with the 90th Division from July 1918 to July 1919. After the Armistice, he was stationed in Germany for several months. Mr. Wingren continued in connection with army life until he attained the rank of Major. Major Wingren is a bachelor and lives at the old Wingren homestead in the eastern part of Burnet. He takes considerable interest in politics and has served the county as Chairman of the Democratic Executive Committee. |
