Peter Eldredge was one of the first missionary Baptists in the Republic of TX and then in the State of TX. He figured prominently in the 1836-1845 period and more so in the next period. He settled near the present town of Zephyr in Brown Co. in 1858. A son, Nathan, made his home in the Co. about 1861. Nathan was on the census for Palo Pinto Co. in 1860. Peter was on the Burnet Co. census in 1860 and 1870, as was his son, Daniel, who is listed in Oatmeal in 1870. Peter preached from Llano to Brown Co. during that time. He was 73 on the 1870 census.
Peter came to preach at the home of his son, Nathan, on Stepps Creek. From the Brown Co. History it is quoted "on occasions the people overflowed his house out into the yard under a spreading live-oak tree." Peter traveled as far as Palo Pinto Co. on the northeast and Llano Co. on the south.
He influenced the lives of many people of his period. One being, George Webb Slaughter, who joined the Baptist Church after attending a revival held by Peter. After that Slaughter was ordained and began to preach in 1845. His first revival was held in San Augine Co. and lasted 11 days. Slaughter named his third son Peter Eldridge Slaughter, who was b. in Sabine Co. in 1846. Records from the Baptist Seminary state that Peter's father was a sea captain who came from Scotland or Ireland w/2 brothers and their families about the time of the Revolutionary War; first to Maryland...then Captain Eldredge moved to Georgia where Peter, b.. Peter was a soldier in the War of 1812... at the Battle of New Orleans w/ Andrew Jackson. He was a private in Captain John Reid's Co., Col. Wimberly's 3rd Regiment, Georgia Militia. He was discharged at Darien, Georgia. Peter was about 20 years old when he was ordained by Rev. Jesse Mercer and Rev. Tommy Rhodes.
