Notes for John Green McFarlin
Joined the Texas Rangers when he was just sixteen, serving first under a Capt. Talbert, then for 12 months with Brig. Gen.Edward Tarrant's regiment, as an Indian fighter in the area of modern day Dallas-Ft.Worth; later took part in the Prairie Fight in Fannin County. Left the Rangers and moved to Llano County and bought land for a ranch in Jan. 1853. Re-entered Ranger service during the Civil War, stationed at Camp San Saba, protecting the frontier from Indian raids. In 1867, he once again left the Rangers and went back to raising stock, this time near Bertram, in Burnet County. His daughter, Martha Nettie McFarlin Gray wrote a biography of him, "The Adventures of John Green McFarlin" which is preserved in the Barker Texas History collection at the University of Texas Library. His father, William Angus McFarlin, fought in the Texas Revolution.
