My great-grandfather, JAMES REDING FINLEY, entered the Civil War from Cass County TX. He was born in Talbot County GA 15 October 1845 to OWEN & MELINDA P. (REDING) FINLEY and came to Cass County 1859-1860. According to his "Soldiers Application for Pension" he enlisted July 4, 1862 and was discharged May 1865, serving in Co. B of Lane's Regiment. When the war
ended it was Hardman's Brigade. This was probably another name for the Third Texas Cavalry. Family stories are that he was 16 years old when he enlisted as a substitute for a man who paid him $250 and a horse and saddle.
He married ELLEN ELIZABETH PHILLIPS in Cass County on 7 March 1872. Their children were OWEN JACKSON FINLEY, WM. CHARLES FINLEY, MATTIE C. FINLEY & JAMES E. FINLEY. After Ellen's death in 1880, he married PARALEE HARTY
PENNY in Cass County and their children were JOHN D. FINLEY, NETTIE M. FINLEY, UNA FINLEY, ARCHER D. FINLEY, ROBERT FINLEY, ANNIE B. FINLEY and NAOMI FINLEY. He died at Bryans Mill in Cass County on 15 Nov 1931 and is buried
at Oakridge Cemetery, Marietta.
