James Lawrence Hatcher James was a private in Co D South Carolina 2nd Rifles enlisted 15 March 1863 Franklin, VA, and was paroled at Appomattox Court House 9 April 1865.

Nel sent you the info but she got it from me. James was my great grandfather. There is a picture of him in uniform at the above web site.

James Lawrence Hatcher was born Oct. 1, 1845 in Anderson Co., SC and died March 26, 1905 in Avinger, Cass Co. He married Eliza C. Harris 1865 in SC. Eliza was born Sept. 25, 1844 in SC and died Oct. 13, 1915 in Cass Co. Both are buried in Simmons Cemetery.
James enlisted in 2nd Rifles, March 15, 1863 in Camp Franklin, Va. by Col. Thompson. He is present until June 25, 1864 when he was sent to the hospital. July-Aug. 1864 he was on furlough. On Feb. 10, 1865 he was AWOL. He then appears as a POW on a list of prisoners from the Army of Northern Va. He was paroled at Appamattox Court House April 9, 1865.

On June 1, 1864 he was sent to the Jackson Hospital in Richmond, Va for "rubeloa" (rebella). He was listed as being in Jenkin's Brigade. Then he's back in hospital July 25-Aug. 5, 1864 for "corealgia". He's now listed in Bratton's Brigade. He's then furloughed for 30 days on Aug. 5. There's also a copy of a payroll sheet from Jan. 21-Feb. 29, 1864 for $22. The other Hatcher's in this company were John L., Wesley, D. W., and J. A. (whose muster sheets occasionally list him as A. J.).

Children of James & Eliza are Anna Tululah, John Monroe, Charles Harrison, James J., William S., Richard H., Mary, Martha J., Robert , Emily, and Ellen.

Cass Co. Records of 1890 states that James owned 213 2/3 acres valued at $427. It was purchased from J. Ashly; abst. 14, cert. # 61.

I, Mrs. Eliza Hatcher, do hereby make application to the Commissioner of Pensions for a pension, to be granted me under the Act passed by the Thirty-first Legislature of the State of Texas, and approved March 26, A.D. 1900 on the following grounds:
I am the widow of Jas. L. Hatcher, deceased, who departed this life on the 26th day of March, A.D. 1925 in the county of Cass, in the State of Texas.

I have not remarried since the death of my said husband, and I do solemnly swear that I was never divorced from my said husband, and that I never voluntarily abandoned him during his life, but remained his true, faithful and lawful wife up to the date of his death. I was married to him on the 5th day of Feb., A.D., 1865 in the county of Anderson, in the State of S.C.

My husband, the said J. L. Hatcher, enlised and served in the military service of the Confederate States during the war between the States of the United States, and that he did not desert the Confederate Service. I have been a resident of the State of Texas since prior to March 1, A.D. 1880, and have been continuously since a citizen of the State of Texas. I do further state that I do not receive from any source whatever money or other means of support amounting in value to the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars per annum, nor do I own in my own right, nor does any one hold in trust for my benefit or use, estate or property; either real, personal or mixed, either in fee or for life, of the assessed value of over one thousand dollars; nor do I receive any aid or pension from any other State, or from the United States, or from any other source, and I do further state that the answers given to the following questions are true:
1. What is your age? 64 years old
2. Where were you born? Anderson Co., S. C.
3. How long have you resided in the State of Texas? Continuously since 1871
4. How long have you resided in the county of your present residence? And what is your postoffice address? 22 years, P. O. Jefferson, Texas Rout #4
5. What was your husband's full name? James Lawrence Hatcher
6. When and where were you married: Feb. 5, 1865, Anderson Co., S.C.
7. What was the date of his death? March 26,1905
8. In what State was your husband's command originally organized? South Carolina
9. How long did your husband serve? If known to you, give date of enlistment and discharge: Enlisted in spring of 1862 and served until was closed.
10 What was the name or letter of the company, or name or number of the battalion, regiment or battery of artillery in which your husband served? If he was transferred from one branch of service to another, give time of transfer, description of command and of service: Co. D, 2nd Rifle Regiment of South Carolina, was not transferred
11. Name branch of service in which your husband served, whether infantry, cavalry, artillery or the navy or if commissioned as an officer by the President, his rank and line of duty, or if detailed for special service, under the law of conscription, the nature of such service, and how long did he serve? 12. Have you transferred to others any property of any kind for the purpose of becoming a beneficiary under this law? No

Dear Sir: I have the honor to request the military record of Jas. L. Hatcher who is reported to have enlisted in company D, 2nd Regiment South Carolina Infantry in the service of the Confederate States Army.

Purpose: The widow of the person above named is an applicant for a Confederate pension granted by this State, and I desire to verify his proof of service.

The records show that one J. L. Hatcher, private, Company D, 2d South Carolina Rifles, Confederate States Army, was enlisted March 15, 1863, at Franklin, Virginia, and was paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865.

 

Affidavit of Physician
The State of Texas, County of Cass

Before me J. P. Fant, County Judge of Cass, County, State of Texas, on this day personally appeared Dr. C. E. Davis who is a physician in good standing, who, being by me duly sworn, on oath says that he has carefully examined Mrs. Eliza Hatcher and finds her laboring under the following disabilities:

(If a soldier, state fully whether he lost a limb, or limbs, or is blind or totally disabled; in the latter case stating specifically the personal ailment and conditions that render her entirely helpless and incapacitated, physically or mentally, for any work or business; if the widow of a soldier, "for any kind of work suitable for her sex.")

She's 69 years of age and is suffering from chronic articular rheumatism, also has a (?) ulcer on both legs. She is in very low state of health. She is unable to do any kind of work to earn a support.
