I am very proud to say my great grandfather was a Confederate Soldier from Cass Co. John E. NUNN was born June 1846 in Fayette County, Alabama, the 4th child of Joseph Brown NUNN and Mary Lutitia HART NUNN. He enlisted in the Confederate Army on May 10, 1864 at Athens, Texas, as a Private. He served in Co. B, 13th Texas Artillery, Col. Joseph Bate's Regiment. He, with men named REAGAN, ROWLAND and QUICK, served on a cannon crew. My dad, Thomas NUNN, remembered his grandfather speaking of the war and the cannon crew. He was told, the cannon was so loud when fired that the men had to open their mouths to keep their ear dumbs from bursting. John E. NUNN served until the surrender and was discharged at Velasco, Texas in 1865. He returned home and married Mary Frances ARNOLD, the daughter of John T. ARNOLD and Mary Evvaline DAVIS, on September 26, 1873 in Marion County, Texas. This union produced four children; John E. Jr. who died in infancy; Euclid Wilburn ; Robert Leander "Bob"; and William Lee. John E. NUNN lived most of his life in Cass County, Texas, in and around Linden and Atlanta. He was granted a Confederate Pension on April 1, 1912. He died on August 26, 1918 of cancer, at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Robert L. NUNN and Fannie Arbelle THOMAS NUNN in Atlanta, Texas. John E. NUNN is buried in the Smyrna Cemetery in Atlanta. A Confederate Marker was placed at his grave and a Confederate Marker Dedication Service held on August 26, 1995. All the NUNNs in Cass County are descendants of John E. NUNN Confederate Veteran.
