James Monroe STRINGER of Cass County, Texas served 3 years in the Civil War as a Lt. in Co. B, Morgan’s Reg., Parsons Brigade / Steels division. Following the war he returned to Bryans Mill, TX where he and wife, Mary E.(REEVES) farmed and raised their family. Their children were: Cornelia,(Mrs. James H. FLETCHER),Thomas Williamson (Sarah A. MORGAN), James “Jim”, Georgian Ann (Mrs James A. BELL), William Perkins “Buck”, Gatsy E.(Mrs.George INKELBARGER), Orville “Bud” Stringer, Lillie E.( Mrs Robert LEE), Annie S.( Mrs Robert LITTREL), Charles Baldy “Doc” (Lucy BROCK). James’ Confederate pension (#700) was approved the 23 day of Sept 1899 and he stated he was nearly blind at the time. He died fourteen months later on 18 Nov 1900 and is buried in the little Bell Cemetery located across the road from his home near Bryans Mill. Mary applied for her widows pension (#7818) at age 66 saying they had lived in that area for 46 years and she had married James in 1851 in Georgia. Mary lost her hearing and most of her sight in the years to come and lived with her single sons Jim and Buck STRINGER until her death. She died 12 day of Nov 1928 and is buried in the Bryans Mill Cemetery next to her sister Effie (REEVES) MATHEWS. Many of James and Mary’s descendants can be found in Cass and Bowie Counties.
