W.W. Goodman replied to inquiry about his absence without leave in a letter to Hon. J. C. Jones, Austin Texas, dated June 29, 1917
"Dear Sir:
Replying to your letter of June 23, will say that I was on a 20 day furlough and while at home with measles I took typhoid fever and was away from the army about two monts but I had Dr. Galespie our family physician to send in a certificate that I was sick but I don't know whether it every got to the captain of the army or not.
I reported back to my company about the 1st of January 1865. And there was nothing said to me about being absent.
Now if this is not sufficient evidence to make the matter clear to you, I can get the affidavits of two of three ladies of the community to the truthfulness of the above statements.
