COMPANY THREE, BEAT 5, INFANTRY,
Titus County (now Morris), Texas




This company, sometimes referred to as reserves, was formed at Spring Hill in present Morris County, Texas on July 18, 1861. Some of these men later joined other Confederate units, some in Cass County. Following is the muster roll:

I Jessee Moon, Captain of the foregoing company do hereby certify that the foregoing is a full and complete list of the officers and privates of said company. That the same was organized on the 18th instant at Spring Hill in said Beat - That the same is a reserve company of infantry.

[EDITOR's NOTE] The above account is from a copy of the original given to Melba Tims (CCGS member) by Mrs. A.L. Peek of Spring Hill in Morris County. Following is further research on some of those mentioned in the above account. Many lived in Cass County or joined units from Cass County.

JESSEE MOON, born c. 1830 in Alabama left a wife and three children when he left for the war.

HENRY and ROBERT McDOWAL (McDOWELL) were the sons of William (1800-1863) and Liama McDowell who are buried at Spring Hill. William McDowell was born in County Antrim, Ireland.

JAMES HENDERSON, born c. 1833 in NC left a wife, Rebecca and a son, William at home when he left for the war.

JAMES MONROE CONNER (1833-1909) and wife, Emeline are buried in Daingerfield. William M. (1820-1902) is there also.

ALEXANDER SCOTT, born c. 1827 in KY left a wife, Elizabeth and children, Hugh, Alex, Caldonia and Hamilton at home.

WILLIAM J. STRICKLIN (1832-1916) married Virginia Loving. He later joined Co. B of the 19th Texas Infantry.

M.A. GLASS, born c. 1823 in AL left a wife and two children at home.

SOLON LOVING is possibly the son of Migginson (1797-1860) and Nancy (1805-1866) Loving who are buried at Loving Cemetery at Spring Hill.

CHESLEY P. FORESYTHE (1815-1882) and wife, Lucy J. (1837-1917) are buried at Loving Cemetery.

MILTON S. COFFEY (1821-1915) was later a Pvt. In CO D, 27th Regt. Texas Cav. and is buried at Spring Hill.

BENNET HAMBLETON, born c. 1818 in TN left a wife and four sons at home.

NATHANIEL WRIGHT (1829-1910) and wife, Lizzie (1835-1901) are buried at Spring Hill. He was later a Pvt., 8th Brig. Texas Militia.

A.H. DOSS, born c. 1839 in AL left a wife, Betsy at home. Apparently they had just married.

JAMES R. RAINS (RANES) (1829-1901) and wife L.E. (1834-1897) are buried at Spring Hill.

ARTHUR REYNOLDS, born c. 1839 was living with the James Ranes family as a farm laborer.

ISAAC SHELTON, born c. 1844 in AL and JOHN, born c 1843 were the sons of John & Carrie Shelton.

HAMPTON MAPP, born c. 1824 and WILLIAM, born c. 1840 were the sons of William and Leann Mapp of Georgia.

CHARLES D. CURRY (1838-1907) was the son of W.L. & Mary Curry of Georgia and the husband of Nancy McDowell (1841-1937). All are buried at Spring Hill.

JOHN (JAMES) THIGPEN (1839-1903) was the son of Spencer Thigpen of NC and husband of Harriet Jane Glass. They are buried at Omaha.

GEORGE CROSSLIN, born c. 1822 in GA left a wife, Matilda and sons, George & Thomas at home.

ROBERT MITCHEL, born c. 1824 in TN left a wife, M.J. and sons, Caswell & Murphy at home.

HENRY C. McDOWELL, born c. 1837 in AL was 6 ft. and had blue eyes, light hair and fair complexion. He was a brick layer. He later left the Spring Hill Infantry to join the Cypress Rangers in Cass County.

W.J. "MONT" HUFF and J. RICHARD "DICK" HUFF later joined the Cypress Rangers in Cass County and then Co. F, Sims Regiment.

The GURLEY brothers, WILLIS, JESSEE, DANIEL, DOCK, JACOB and STANFORD were the sons of Louis and Emily Gurley who removed from Tenn. To Texas in the 1850's. In 1860, Jessee was living near Holly Springs in Cass County. Daniel and Willis later joined the Cypress Rangers in Cass County which then became a part of Co. F of Sims Regiment. Willis was wounded at Holly Springs, MS and later taken prisoner at Ripley, MS.

THOMAS H. ROUNTREE who was the county clerk for Titus County later removed to Cass County with his wife, Sarah and two sons, Seaborn and Charles. Thomas was born c. 1835 in AL. In 1880, Seaborn was boarding with Henry Clay Fulcher, a merchant at Cusetta.
