The First Baptist Church of Hughes Springs was organized in July, 1881, by Rev. W. W. Lee with the following members: Mr. and Mrs. James Niblett, Mr. and Mrs. Mack Fletcher, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Callaway, Mrs. Kate Little, Mrs. J. M. Murphy, Mrs. C. C. Callaway, and J. M. Cook.
The first pastor, W. W. Lee was followed by John A. Shaddix. Other pastors were in the order: G. K. Williams, W. F. Martin, T. W. Jordan, E.. F. Watson, Rev. Shields, Rev. Jackson, Rev. McDaniel, James A Shaddix, John Shaddix, Roy Collum, W. A. Darden, H. L. G. Busby.
This church has ordained eight preachers from its membership: James W. Reeder, John H. Watson, J. C. Perser, Alpha Shelton, Flint Little, Hugh Meredith, J. L. Shaddix, and Roy Collum, Jr.
The present pastor (1938) is C. L. Porter. Membership roll has 257 names. Sunday School, B. T. U. and W. M. U. are held at regular hours.
