DUNCAN FAMILY CAME FROM GEORGIA
William Edward (Bill) Duncan, son of Hinton and Lucinda
Duncan, was born in Jones Co., Georgia, Jan. 31, 1831. Prior
to coming to Texas, he married Sarah Frances Bragg, daughter
of Samuel C. and Sarah L. Bragg of Wilkins County, Ga.
The young married couple made the long trip to the
new, sparsely settled Texas frontier in 1852, settling first
in the vicinity of Young's Chapel. Several of their firstborn
are buried in the old Abernathy-Hearne cemetery nearby.
Several years later they moved to a large tract of
land bordering the waters of Black Cypress near Barnes Lake.
A brother, Hinton Duncan had arrived
from Georgia in the meantime and settled nearby.
W.B. (Brag) Duncan, sole surviving heir of the K.W.E.
Duncan's, was born April 10, 1860. As a young man he farmed and
hauled logs by ox teams to his fathers sawmill.
In 1896 W.B. Duncan married Miss Lula Armstrong. Mr.
Duncan had become a man of considerable means down through the
years, having acquired extensive real estate holdings and other
property. His varied interests included business buildings, railroad
stock and miscellaneous securities. He was a large cotton buyer
and exporter for a number of years and did his part toward putting
the town on the map as an agricultural product shipping center.
W.B. Duncan died Feb. 19, 1931, and is buried in the
Avinger cemetery. His wife Lula Duncan out lived him 3 years
departing this world Dec. 17, 1933. The attractive Duncan home
with the big Magnolia and Holly trees in front still stand as
a show place among the older houses of the town. It is now the
residence of Miss Esta McCain, niece of Mrs. W.B. Duncan.
