Josiah Hanley Hill. b. 1810 SC. Josiah, an early settler of Jefferson Texas was a Methodist Minister. He came to Jefferson Texas in 1846/47, traveling from Shreveport Louisiana. Josiah owned land in and around Jefferson. He raised and shipped Cotton on Caddo Lake. Around 1848 one of the Cotton boats sunk in Caddo Lake with all the cotton aboard creating an early Texas Supreme Court Case. Josiah was Married to Nancy Stephens b. 1805 in Virginia. Two of their seven Children, were born in Jefferson Tx. Mary J. Hill b. 1847 and Ann A, Hill b. 1851. Two of his other children enlisted in the Jefferson Guard at the start of the Civil War, Richard W. Hill and William Stephens Hill. The unit later became the 19th Texas infantry.
