THE CARWILE FAMILY
Zachariah Carwile was born Sept. 11, 1750 in Goochland County, Va. of Welsh Parentage. He died Aug 4, 1841 in Abbeville County, S.C. and was buried at Little River Baptist Church at Levelland, S.C. In 1771 he married Mary McMahon who was born Sept 19, 1755 and died Dec 12, 1833. Zachariah Carwile fought in the Revolutionary War at Kings Mountain under Col. Benjamine Cleveland. He lived for a time on the Holston River in Eastern Tennessee and at New Berry, S.C.
The children of Zachariah Carwile and Mary McMahon are:
1. William, born Dec 15, 1773
2. James, born Nov 7, 1775
3. Rebecca, born Jan 21, 1778, married Samuel Hannah
4. Mary, born May 12, 1780, died 1856, married John Graham
5. Anna, born Mar. 1, 1783, died 1826, married James Graham
6. John Schuyler, born Feb 17, 1786, died Nov 8, 1852, married Elizabeth Williams
7. Josiah, born Dec 21, 1788, died Apr. 1, 18441, married Sarah Callahan and later Elizabeth
McAdams.
8. Samuel S., born Sep 19, 1792, married Elizabeth Callaham
9. Zachariah, Jr.
Zachariah Carwile, Jr. was born Feb 4, 1797 in Abbeville County, S.C. and died Sep 28, 1866 in Pontotoe County, Miss. He married Mary "Polly" Callaham who was born in 1809 and died Jul 22, 1860. She was the daughter of John Callaham (1770-1855) and Nancy Jarrett (1791-1873).
Their ten children were:
1. Mary Anne, born 1820, unmarried
2. Samuel J. (1822-1892) married to Sally Martin and Celia Ann Graham
3. Joh Schuyler (next paragraph)
4. Susan, born 1832, married Samuel Graham
5. Bettsy, born 1833, married a Trotter
6. George M. (1835-1863)
7. James L., born 1836, served in CSA
8. Josiah, born 1839, served in CSA
9. Rebecca E., born 1843, married the same Samuel Graham who had married her sister Susan

John Schuyler Carwile was born Mar. 6, 1825 in S.C. and died Apr 28, 1903 at New Prospect in Marion County, Tx. He first married Sarah Ann Armstrong (1831-1862). They had four children:
1. Mary (1851-1923) married Andy Pruitt
2. Isabella, born 1853, married Will Trotter
3. Andrew (1855-1923) married Mattie Stone
4. Milton, born 1858, died in Arkansas.
After Sarah's death, John Carwile married the second time to Mary Jane Pearman (1834-1919) the daughter of Jonathan Pearman and Letitia Wakefield. They had seven children:
1. Margaret, born 1865
2. Sallie (1866-1927) married John Grubbs
3. Newton, (1868-1936) married Lela Hall
4. Cowan, born 1869
5. Lula (1872-1956) married James Hugghins
6. Ella (1874-1950) married Willis Carlisle
7. Johnnie (1877-1933) married Allie McCann.
John Carwile's second wife and most of his children came to Texas and lived near New Prospect, Marion County, Texas.
Zachariah Hugh Carwile was born Jun 11, 1845 in Abbeville County, S.C. and died Jul 22, 1917 at New Colony, Cass County, Texas. During the Civil War he joined Co. E., 7th Reg., Mississippi Cavalry. This was organized from Pentotoe Co., Miss. where the family was living at the time. He first married Mary B. Buena Vista Armstrong, daughter of Andrew B. Armstrong and Minerva Mitchell and sister to John Carwile's first wife. She was born 1851, and died 1881. They had five children:
1. Josiah (1870-1906) married Doce Sandlin
2. Corrie (1872-1952) married L.M. Melton
3. John (1874-1942) married Ollie Mills
4. Hampton (1876-1912) married Ella Jane Clark
5. Kitty (1879-1959) married Fred Schmidt
All these children came to Texas with their father in 1887. Prior to leaving S.C., Zachariah H. Carwile married the second time to Esther Jan Latham (1846-1919), the daughter of Andrew Jackson and Mary Ann Latham. She helped him to establish the New Colony Baptist Church.
