HOWE FAMILY

The original coat of arms: Or, a fesse between three wolves
heads couped sable.
Crest: Out of a ducal coronet or, a plume of fine ostrich feathers.
The name of this English family was originally that of a place,
to indicate a valley. The family originated in the west of England.
One ancestor was John Howe, who lived during the reign of Henry
the Eight. From John Howe was descended Sir Scoope Howe, who
established the family in Ireland. Sir Scoope Howe's three grandsons
were noted British Commanders during the American Revolution.
George Augustus Howe was killed during the recapture of Fort
Ticonderoga in 1777.
Admiral Richard Howe, born 1726, died 1799, he commanded the
British Navy during the American Revolution, and was victorious
over the French at Gibraltar in 1782, and he defeated the French
fleet off Ushant in 1793.
Sir William Howe was Commander of the British forces during
the early years of the War for Independence. He was born in 1729
and died 1814. He was victorious at the Battle of Long Island
in 1776. He occupied Philadelphia in 1777 and was recalled to
England in 1778.
Capt. Abraham Howe, among the American troops who fought at
Lexington, was a descendent of James Howe, who settled at Roxbury,
Mass. In 1637.
Lt. Robert Howe, Sr. helped to drive the British from Virginia.
Samuel Gridley Howe, born at Boston in 1801, died in 1876.
He graduated from Harvard Medical College in 1824. In 1831 he
went to Paris to study the methods of educating the blind, and
established a school in Boston for the blind. His wife, Julia
Ward Howe, was the author of "Battle Hymn of the Republic."

Georgia" on pg. 611, also found in an old Bible of Robert
Howe, Jr.
Robert Howe, Jr. married Miss Armour in York District, S.C.
Robert Howe III was born Jan 22, 1782 and died Feb 10, 1858.
He married Susannah Gray in 1807 in Baldwin Do., Georgia. Susannah
Gray Howe was born Sep 13, 1786 and died Oct. 1, 1846. Then children
was born to them.
William James Howe, the son of Robert Howe III was born May
31, 1813, Macon Co., Georgia. He died Mar 4, 1893 and is buried
at Douglassville, Cass County, Texas. He married Delia Adaline
Harp, Dec. 19, 1842 in Upon County, Georgia. (Records on file
in Crawford County, Ga.) Celia Adaline Harp was born Dec 19,
1819 in Baldwin County, Ga. And died Dec 16, 1892, buried at
Douglassville, Cass County, Tx. Eight children were born to them:
Robert D. Howe, Egbert M. Howe, William A. Howe, Corinne S. Howe,
Susan E. Howe, Thomas G. Howe, Addella C. Howe, and James E.
Howe.
William James Howe and Celia Adaline Howe moved from Macon
Co., Ga. To Cass Co., Tx and purchased land in 1859, this record
was taken from Linden, Texas and shown in Book N page 641.
Robert D. Howe and Egbert M. Howe were in the Civil War, Robert
was killed and Egbert died of pneumonia.
William a. Howe, married Lillie Carlow, and they had five
children: Maggie Howe, Thomas A. Howe, Robert Howe, William Howe,
Aurelia Howe.
Corinne S. Howe married William L. Heath, and they had four
children: Egbert Heath, William L. Heath, Ira Heath, Thomas Heath.
Susan E. Howe married Lina Mims, and four boys were born to
them: Otha Mims, Lina Mims, Emmet Mims, and Ralph Mims.
Dr. Thomas G. Howe married Martha Brooks May 9, 1880 and had
four children: Una Howe (born Jun 10, 1887), Conrad Howe (born
Dec 12, 1889), Cohen Howe (born Dec 2, 1894), Lerina Howe (born
Oct 25, 1896). Cohen Howe died Jul 11, 1938 and is buried in
Pine Crest Cemetery, Atlanta, Texas.
Della C. Howe married Ebb A. Allday and seven children were
born to them: E.A. Allday Jr., Harp Allday, Elbert Allday, Martin
Allday, Robert Allday, Addell Allday, Corine Allday.
James Emmett Howe married Laura Lightfoot and they had six
children: Egbert Howe, Henry Howe, Clarence Howe, Addell Howe,
Martha Howe and Emmett Howe.
Additional information on:
Robert Howe's parents have never been definitely proven. He was
born in South Carolina on Jan 22, 1782, and died in Crawford
County, Ga. Feb 20, 1858.
Susannah Gray's parents: James Gray (her father) born May
1, 1758, was a Revolutionary War soldier, and died in Pike County,
Ga. On Nov 18, 1833. Mrs. Mary Gray (maiden name unknown) (her
mother) was born May 26, 1769 and died Jul 16, 1836 in Ga.
Celia Adaline Harp's parents: Dixon Harp (her father) born
1763 in Ga., died 1858. Celia Edmondson (her mother) born 1782
in Ga., died 1851. Both of her parents are buried in Glenwood
Cemetery in Thomaston, Upson Co., Ga. The parents of neither
Celia Edmondson nor Dixon Harp have been proved.
William James Howe and Delia Adaline Harp Howe, with their
eight children moved from Graingerville, Macon Co., Ga. In the
summer of 1859 to Cass Co., Tx.

Jan 6, 1857 in Douglassville, Cass Co., Tx. And died Jan 11,
1943 in Atlanta, Cass Co., Tx.
1. Dr. Una Howe - married Robert Hasskard Feb 14, 1917. Una was
born Jun 10, 1887 and died Jul 10, 1918 in Atlanta, Cass Co.,
Tx. and is buried in Pine Crest Cemetery, Atlanta, Tx.

DOUGLASSVILLE CEMETERY
Leslie Lightfoot Howe - born 1889 - died 1892 - died in Dumas,
but was buried in Douglassville, Cass Co., Tx. In July 1893.
She is probably buried near the graves of Ida Blanche Greene
Howe (wife of James Emmett Howe) and her two children who died
in infancy. These three graves are marked, but Leslie's is not.
Three remaining children are probably buried near graves of
William James Howe and wife, Celia Adaline Harp Howe, who died
in 1893 and 1892, respectively. (And Leslie Lightfoot Howe may
be buried in the same spot too.) These three are:
1. Burtis B. Howe - b. 1898 d. 1899
2. Cora Howe - b. 1906 d. 1910
3. Robert R. Howe - b. 1913 d. 1914
Four children of James Emmett Howe Sr. and his second wife,
Laura Ida Lightfoot.
