The Lambert - Lamberth National Family Reunion

In 1974, the Lambert family brought a "first" to Cass County history by having a National reunion of the Lambert-Lambert(h) Families of the United States.

Mr. & Mrs. Joe W. Lambert, Douglassville, Tx. of the Red Hill Community, were the hostesses for the occasion. Central headquarters for the reunion were held in the Travel Inn Motel with over 200 people attending from 30 states.

This national reunion had its beginning in Ala. in 1967 when Alton Lambert of Cottondale, Ala. and Chester Lamberth of Dallas were "hunting for our kin without success until we met". One of their ancestor's brother, William Blue Lambert (1815-1886) came to Cass County in 1851 and settled in the Red Hill Community, which is located between the towns of Linden and Douglassville. Therefore, this is why the national reunion was held in Cass County this past year, although it has been held in other states for the past seven years.

Mayor Bonny Roark welcomed the families at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday and at 11:00 a.m. a pioneer trail trip to the Red Hill Community was begun. Upon arrival, the string of cars journeyed to the family cemetery where the markers of William B. Lambert and other ancestors were viewed. The next stop was the St. Williams Catholic Church and the adjacent Henderson Cemetery. Ed Lambert, grandson of William, and a native of Cass County who was the "trail boss" for the caravan related, "This was the first Catholic Church in Cass County in 1912. During the days of the "Know-Nothing" movement when as anti-Catholic agitator visited Colonel William Lambert, Lambert told him he was not even acquainted with the Catholic faith. However, being quite curious about the faith and in all fairness, he invited a Priest to visit he and his family. The nearest Priest was located in Nacogdoches. Rev John C. ANerez accepted the invitation of Colonel Lambert, went to Red Hill, instructed him and his family and baptized them. Although this church is no longer used since there is a Catholic Church located in the town of Atlanta, the beautiful little white, gothic-type building is still maintained.

Making almost a complete circle, the caravan eventually would up back at the Red Hill Community Center, formerly the Red Hill School, for a picnic lunch and renewing of old acquaintances, and the meeting of some kin for the first time. Those who came the farthest for the affair were Mary Lambert Smith of San Diege, Ca. and Marilyn Lambert Kinney of Key West, Fla. The oldest member of the family there was Will Behan, who is 93 years old. And, for the first time in 34 years, the six sons and six daughters of Mr. & Mrs. Leo Lambert were reunited.

The group reassembled for the banquet later that evening. The program was presented by Mrs. Myreline Bowman and Mrs. Kathy Wicks of the Cass County Genealogical Society who told about William Lambert's Cass County. Members of the reunion committee composed of Francis Lambert, Gladys Lambert, Joe W. Lambert, Chester Lambert and Patsy Lambert Nolen. Eddie Roy Lambert was master of Ceremonies.
