Vernon Edward Lilley

photo of my Vernon Edward Lilley's 8th grade class in Hughes Springs, Texas. He is the tall one, third from right. Unfortunately, there were no names on the picture of any of the other children.

picture of Vernon Edward Lilley at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, on top of a tank. I will understand if you do not want to post this one as it is not of Hughes Springs. But he was a Hughes Springs Native and I spent every summer vacation growing up "back home".

Citizens’ Military Training Camp

Vernon was at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, for Citizens' Military Training Camp from July 9th thru August 7th, 1926. He was designated a 1st Class Machine Gunner. His Certificate of Completion and a picture of him sitting on top of a WWI Tank at Fort Sill are with the family.

Vernon left Texas with his family for California in 1943. He traveled by pickup truck with his first cousin John Allen Lilley and his family. Dad and Mom settled in Torrance, California. The family's first home was an abandoned trolley car at the Torrance Train Station on Sartori Avenue. The train station today is a very popular restaurant.
