Descendants of John Moon
Generation No. 1
1. JOHN1 MOON was born Bet. 1780 - 1790 in TN, and died Bef. 1850 in Probably Jackson Co., Ala. He married MARY HAMMONDS. She was born Abt. 1789 in NC, and died in Texas.
Notes for JOHN MOON:
1780-1790 John Born Both Annice and James W 1880 census states he was born in TN
6/18/1803 There is a listing in Sevier County, TN for a tax sale on delinquent acreage and there is a John Moon or John More with 100 acres FROM Gen. Abstracts from TN Newspapers 1791-1808 by Eddlemon
By 1820 in TN NOTE: All brothers name started with "J" which is said to be a Quaker tradition--note from Claudette Wakefield and she says as far as she can determine, they were not.
Note from Josephine Trumble in 1995 stated that he was a Baptist preacher and that she was Mary Hammonds Moon who lived to be 98 years old.
the Jonas Moon and Note were from I believe Claudette Wakefield and the letter is addressed to her by Josephine Moore Dedman great granddaughter of Annis Moon Trumble.

"The following, listed in chronological order, are the preachers of Union church since 1835 until present: John Moon, Levi Isabell, George F. Sulman, Peter Maples, etc. (19 more listed)" Further states that Union Primitive Baptist Church was first located in a log house which was built near the center of Union Cemetery in 1835. This house had a large fireplace and the pulpit was on the side. It was destroyed by fire during the Civil War. A few memebers of the Bethel Church of Madison Co liviin in the vicinity of Woodville, Al met as an arm of Bethel Chruch from 1834 until constituted as a church the first Sunday in August, 1835; this was the beginning of the Union Primitive Baptist church. There were 24 members; 7 of these members were colored. On the second Saturday in October 1835, Union Church became a member of the Mud Creek Association which had been organized in 1821 at Hollywood, Al. The church has met regularly from 1835 until present with only a few excpetions (this was written in 1976) The previous page states that Union Cemetery is the largest, best kept and most desired place for burial in the Woodville area. States that Moses Maples and Wife Catharine deed property for the cemetery. First person buried was Sallie Maples, a young daughter of Joe Maples.

There is also John M right before aged 20-29 Joshua and Elizabeth already married and out of the house. That leaves Jasper or Jonas as the 10-14 year old and one of them grown and moved away. We know that Jonas made it to Cass County, but not what age he was.
Late 1840's some of family moved to Texas. Claudette Wakefield says that Mary moved to Cass County Texas with 6 or 7 of her children.

Ages and names certainly fit right in: wonder if they thought he died because they could not find him in Ala after 1859 and he had moved on to be with brothers. Left Cass County and went to CA with the gold rush and disappeared. Josephine Hall has an estate settlement which bears out this scenario.
While in CA he sent some gold and a conch shell back to his family here. He asked that the conch shell be passed down to any member of the family neamed Jonas after him. the first one it was given to was Jonas Allen Dennis. It is now in the possessions of Jenny Lee Dennis Tenbrook, his daughter.
Cass Co Probate Record 1856: Jessee Moon petitons that Jonas Moon has either departed this life or is believe to be in CA leaving land in Cass county. Only relatives are a mother and four brother and four sisters , most of whom reside in the counties of Cass and Titus.
Then there is a record where Annis gives her part of the land from brother Jonas' estate to her mother Mary.
x. MARY MOON, b. Bet. 1831 - 1835; m. JOHN P. MAPLES.
Notes for MARY MOON:
Lived in Shreveport, La
In 1850 Jackson Co., Alabama there is John B Moon married to Melvina (141) and John H married to Saline (104). There is no John P Maples in Cass County, TX.
Notes for JOHN P. MAPLES:
The only family I find that is possible in 1850 Jackson county, Ala is
John B Maples 27 TN
Melvina 22 Ala
James H 2 Ala
Joshua L 1 Ala
This looks like a possibility because the Maples may have lived in TN when the Moons did and moved along with the same group; Melvina could have been Mary and she could have been born in Ala as she was the next to last child and the last child Jackson, lists his birthplace as Ala.; both boys are named with J names that are the same as the Moon boys.
NOTE: If this is correct, there is a Wm C Mples above who is 54 from VA with wife Jane L 44 who is from TN and 6 kids from 19-2 all born in Ala. Note there is also Moses 67 with children 15-2 all bron in Ala. A Moses Maples gave the land for the Union Primitive Baptist church cemetery. Several other Maples

Notes for JESSEE MOON:
There is a marriage in 1850 Titus County of Jesse Moon to Mrs. Mary M Moon. Elaine said that she had her as Mary M instead of Mary H and that it looked like an M to her on the census. She said that there is a family story that one of the Moon brothers died on the way to Texas and that Jessee married his widow, so this certainly fits.

S M MOON DEAD
Mr. S M Moon, who was thought to be dying last Thursday evening just as we went to press, rallied and lived until Saturday evening when he passed away.
Rev. Wm. Crawford, of Cisco, conducted the funeral services at the Baptist church Sunday evening and the remains interred in Baird cemetery.
It is with unfeigned sorrow that we chronicle the death of Mr. Moon, who was one of our best citizens.
Mr. Moon was born Oct 29, 1858, consequently was in his 43d year. His death was a shock to the entire community, and we will all miss him, but none so much as his widow and orphan children, and to them we extend our heartfelt sympathy.
Mr. Moon was an honorable, upright and conscientious business man and was respected by all who knew him. Death at all times is sad, but to see a man cut down in the prime of life and usefulness is saddest of all.
Mrs. Crowder, mother of Mr. Moon, Roy, and W G Crowder, S L Moon and Mrs. Wright all arrived last week and were with Mr. Moon when he died.

OBITUARY
S M MOON
life of practical godliness, of bright christian service and wonderfully brave endurance, has come at last to the end to which sooner or later we must all come. The loving husband, the noble father, the staunch, loyal friend, the diligent worker with his open hand, his frank cordiality, his clear insight, he resolute will has passed from our sight, but never from our memory and love. Every citizen must feel that a strong stay has gone. The church of which he was a member must feel that his place can only be filed by Him that has made a vacant. It is the humble task of his friend and pastor to write a few lines in memory of one of the truest of men and the best of friends. Never was there a life which came nearer fulfilling Peter's instruction: "Add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity." than the life of S M Moon, Nothing in the life of Bro. Moon was more remarkable than whole-souled piety. All his faculties seemed to be pervaded by the spirit of the gospel and consecrated to the service of Christ. He was a man of deep convictions; and of nothing was his convictions more profound than of the truth and importance of Christianity. He would put truth in every mind, the flower of charity in every heart, honor and fairness in every relation, and the consolation of religion in every spirit. He was remarkable for his warm and tender affection. There are poor men who will shed tears from a full heart as they exclaim he was a good and noble hearted brother. Poor children also shared his affection. He heard the cry of the babe of Bethlehem across the centuries, and this cry awakened within him sympathy for all of God's needy ones on earth. His heart and pocket book both were open, the one to give sympathy, the other help. Accompanying his deep sympathy, equally strong, but not excluding it, was his intense fidelity to principle. O my brother, truly thou wast a good man. Stern in the integrity of principle, inflexible as adamant in opposition to error, neither concealing nor trying to conceal his intense disdain for all duplicity, abhorring whatever envolved the sacrifice of principle and whoever was evolved in such a sacrifice-his heart was full of kindness, lifting with the gentleness of a mother, the child of sorrow, misfortune or penitence. No wonder that such a man was loved. Thus the good man lived and finished his course. O pitying heavens, drop down the dews of your consolation. O sympathizing Savior, thou didst weep with sisters beside a brother's grave, and thou knowest, O Saviour, that here is a grief still harder to bear. O Holy Ghost, the comforter, come now and comfort. O God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercy and God of all comfort, the ther of the fatherless and the widow's God, come guide and uphold one who still strives to be brave and calm as she leads forth into life the tottering steps of her fatherless little children. Wm Crawford.

MEMORIAL RESOLUTIONS
We, your committee appointed to draft memorial resolutions of Bros. S M Moon beg to submit the following:
Bro. Moon was born in Morris county Texas, 1858 and died January 19th 1901, age 42 years 2 months and 29 days. He was twice married. The last marriage was to Miss Mattie E Coppins, Oct. 13th 1889. He was the father of three children by his first wife and six children by the surviving wife.
Bro. Moon was baptized into the fellowship of the Baptist Church at Baird, Texas by G W Caperton in Jun 1888.
He has from that date led a consistent Christian life, ever devoted and loyal to the church, self sacrificing for its interests. As an officer of the church he served as trustee deacon, and treasurer with efficiency and credit to himself and with satisfaction to his brethren.
As a citizen Bro. Moon was esteemed by all who knew him.
As a business man he was kind accommodating, judicious, and successful.
As a father and husband, he manfully and affectionately complied with the obligations resting upon him.
While many more commendable things might be said of the worthy brother, we knew that he was human, and as such had his faults, but let us cover his faults with mantle of charity, and strive to emulate his noble traits of character and deeds of love.
Whereas it hath pleased our Heavenly Father to take this beloved brother from us.
Therefore be is resolved that we hereby express our deep sense of loss and sorrow,
That we extend to the widowed mother and orphan children our sincere sympathy;
That we humbly and submissively yield to the devine will.
That a copy of this memorial be spread upon the church book and furnished THE BAIRD-STAR the West Texas Baptist and the Baptist Standard for publication. Committee R D Cartle, Dr E R Sartor, W M Coffman.
