CAPTIAN DAVID SAMPLE
The prededing account of "Early Cass County Land Surveys" mentions a certain David Sample in Volume A-1, pages 15-16.
In their book RED RIVER DUST, Eugene Bowers and Everly Oppenheimer have an interesting story about Captain David Sample.
Benjamin F. Brewster came to Red River County in 1835. He brought with him his lovely young daughter, Caroline Eleanor Brewster Cullum, who was a recent widow. Her beauty and charm quickly captured the hearts of all the eligible young men in the area.
Benjamin Brewster was a descendant of Elder Brewster, a passenger on the Mayflower and a signer of the Mayflower Compact.
Captain David Sample was a young lawyer and he quickly became attracted to Caroline, and even though his competition was quite strong, he won the battle and they were married.
Shortly hereafter, in 1839, he was appointed by President Mirabeau B. Lamar to act for the Republic of Texas in a survey to establish the boundary line between Texas and "The United States of the North."
He surveyed along the Sabine River, becoming seriously ill and returned home to die.
His widow, the lovely Caroline, later married Hiram Baker; he died; she then married C.E. Cary. Caroline Eleanor Brewster Cullum Sample Baker Cary died in 1906 at the age of 90 in Weatherford, Texas.
